Jesse STEPHENS 1827/8 Harrow Hill, Drybrook (reply)

These whom you have listed are the children of Robert and Sarah, and the brothers and sisters of Jessie born 1827/28. Of this there is little doubt.

1803 STEPHENS William Robert Sarah Mitcheldean
1808 STEPHENS Mary Robert Sarah Mitcheldean
1810 STEVENS Sophia Robert Sarah Mitcheldean
1815 STEVENS Hester Robert Sarah Forest of Dean Collier Mitcheldean
1817 STEVENS Hester Robert Sarah Harry Hill Collier Drybrook
1817 STEVENS Eliza Robert Sarah Harry Hill Collier Drybrook
1820 STEVENS Rebecca Robert Sarah Harry Hill Collier Drybrook
1822 STEPHENS Sarah Robert Sarah Holly hill Collier Drybrook
1824 STEPHENS Benjamin Robert Sarah Harry Hill Collier Drybrook

all Baptised except Jessie ! I think there should be one more

1827 STEPHENS Jessie Robert Sarah Harry Hill Collier Drybrook.

but he is missing. Still an enigma. (to quote your post in 2008!!)

I only started again on this because I found the Jesse record of 1849, 15 months before the marriage to Elizabeth Downton in 1850. But from what you have said in answer to my 4 questions, I doubt I have it. Hey ho! Thank you for all your help and suggestions. All for now, hilli1

Jesse STEPHENS 1849 - 1872 (reply)

Thank you, once again, for your informative reply. I must assume that Jesse Stephens who was my 2xgreat grandfather, was either not Baptised or the minister forgot to enter the record in his book.
I have his year of birth 1827 from the census records which are consistent throughout, and his marriage certificate confirms this (age 23).
The Baptisman record which comes closest to Jesse's detail is the one which is posted above 1849 - the mother, Sarah is right, but he certainly was not a child. It was 15 months before he married !

I think I am grasping at straws, so I shall put it to rest now.

Again many many thanks for your time and your help.

Hi Jim, where has time gone? I was thinking only last week that we haven't met up this year, and wondered if you had been to London at all ! Trying to find this record for Jesse - why do we have records for all his siblings but not for MY ancestor !!? 'Twas ever thus ! Thank you so much for sending me your message, maybe we'll meet again before too long, best wishes Hilary

Jesse STEPHENS born East Dean c.1827 (reply)

Hi Hilli

I'm afraid I cannot add to the details you already have regarding Jessie's birth. My interest is that their son Jonah born 23 Jan 1855 married Rosanna Marfell at Hope Mansell 18 Mar 1877, she was born 8 Jan 1858, daughter of my great great grandparents, Cornelius Marfell & his cousin Mary Ann Marfell.

Jonah was a Coal Miner who became a City Missionary in London. Jonah & Rosanna had 8 children, one of whom Alfred Horton Stephens, married his cousin Alice Mary Marfell, daughter of my great grandparents Timothy Marfell & Selina Ann Harber.

Having started this reply, I will post it for the sake of other interested readers, but my suspicions caused me to check your profile, so realise that you know all of the above and that we have met twice !!

So 3rd cousin Hilary, we must arrange to meet up again with Carol.

Having checked Slowhands excellent (as usual) response, it has again added to (or rather altered) my Family Tree, picking up on the George & Caroline Roberts
witnesses to Jessie's marriage, I checked out the Roberts & found that I had Caroline Downton as born Long Sutton married to George Roberts in my tree, also their brother Henry is married to Leah Marfell, but in each case I had Downton spelt differently and hadn't made the connection.

Now if you want to really make my day, regarding Sarah Turner 1785, wife of Robert Stephens - I have a George Turner 1845 who married Elizabeth Marfell, he was the son of William Turner 1801 & Maria........!!

Thanks again Slowhands.

Jim Ashton

How did you do that so fast, 'Quickhands' ? ! Thank you so much. Where did you find them ? Did you also find Robert son of Robert and Sarah b. 1805. He married Maryann (Mary) Manning, and at one time I thought Jesse was their son ... Robert and Maryann have a daughter Caroline b. 1837/8, so 10 years after Jesse, but again I have found no siblings inbetween. [Robert widow and daughter Caroline aged 14 were together on the 1851 census] I did wonder about adoption, etc. so will check out the possible Downton, Turner and Manning options.

Jesse STEPHENS born East Dean c.1827 (reply)

Thank you so much for your quick response. Wonderful ! When I found the 1841 census I was not convinced that Robert & Sarah Turner were his parents since they are 52 & 43years old respectively at the time of his birth. Rebecka's birth in 1821/2 was a long time after Sarah and Robert were married in 1802 so maybe their are other children before Rebecka - perhaps in another place. Rebecka, Sarah, and Benjamin (all born in Drybrook) all have Baptismal records showing Robert & Sarah as their parents. It's just Jesse who has no Baptismal record .... ?
