Reuben BRAIN 1869 Bream (reply)

Hi Olwyn,

Thanks for your mesg. I am almost sure that Mary's parents were Richard and Caroline ,as one of the witness at Reubens marriage was a R H Brain, who I think was Mary's brother . Also that is the only Mary Brain I can find living in Bream at aroud about the time Reuben was born. Unfortuneatley I can't find him on the 1871 1881 or 1891 census form under the name of Brain, it has been sugessted that he may have been brought up by someone else. I have been given the info of Richard and Carolines marriage and her surname was Beach, father Henry as you say. If you have any dates on Henry Beach or where he was born I would gladly have a go at looking for info for you.

Reuben BRAIN 1869 Bream (reply)

If the Mary Brain you are looking for is the daughter of Richard and Caroline then I can tell you that Caroline was the daughter of Henry Beach and she had a sister Eliza who was my gt.gt.grandmother through her first Marriage to Henry Creese.
I have tried for a few years but without any success to get information on Henry Creese.
If you come up with his name in your research I would be very interested.
I do have other information on the Beach family if you are interested.

Reuben BRAIN 1869 Bream (reply)

The 1871 Census in Bream regarding Richards/Ricketts...should be Rickards.

George Rickards 60 Widow, married a Sarah Brain in Lydney in 1839, it gives her father as Richard Brain. Their son Barnard or Elijah Barnard Rickards was my GG.Grandfather.
Also in the 1881 census regarding Mary Ricketts b.1840 I have just looked at the original document on Ancestry.co.uk and it has unm (un-married) in the condition to marriage section. I don't know if any of this will help?

Mary FISHER, nee DORRINGTON nee BRAIN 1853 Bream (reply)

Thanks for that, and all your other help, it's much appreciated. I suppose the only other option is to look through the 1871 census for a Reuben that is 2 yrs old living in the Bream area. That will keep me out of mischief for a while.

Mary FISHER, nee DORRINGTON nee BRAIN 1853 Bream (reply)

That is what you would hope....

however what I have found is that the Enumerators have been known to record names in error...i.e. all people in the household with the same surname as the Head so Rubin BRAIN living in a SMITH household may be recorded as Rubin SMITH !

Mary FISHER, nee DORRINGTON nee BRAIN 1853 Bream (reply)

If as you say Reuben was "farmed" out to be brought up by say a family member or friend, would he not still appear on the census form's under his own name of BRAIN. If it was a formal adoption I would assume that his name would be changed to that of the people who adopted him, then he changed it back when he married. Or is that to fanciful, or am I just getting confused, maybe I wasn't a BRAIN after all.

Reuben BRAIN 1869 Bream (reply)

I know Reuben married Selina Alice Lucas on 30 April 1900 at the Baptist Chapel at Coleford. The Witness's names are E Lucas (which I think is her grandfather) and a R H Brain, which I suppose could be Reubens grandfather.
