William BAILEY Alvington ? (reply)

Hi Slowhands

That was a quick reply. I had already established that the Baeton entry in the 1851 census applied to my William Bailey (the original census page has "Bailey" quite clearly, the Ancestry transcriber put it as Baeton!) It took me weeks to find the family because of this mistranscription yet you found it in minutes - amazing!

Your Langston baptismal entries also apply to my family. William and Mary had two more children, Susannah b. 1825 and Eliza b. 1828 both were baptised at Langstone. Susanna Bailey married Thomas Daniel of Llantrissent where her parents lived for a while (her mother, Mary Morgan, was baptised there in 1799) Susannah Bailey married Stephen Morgan of Goodrich.

In the 1841 census Eliza is listed on the same census page as her father and his second wife, Elizabeth. Eliza's sister Susannah was with their grandparents George and Mary Morgan at Llantrissent in 1841.

The 1851 census has William Bailey's birthplace as Amington (do you think this might be Alvington? That was my conclusion.)

His entry in 1871 when he was a widower with no one else in the household to supply his birthplace details, states Awre. His marriage certificate for his third marriage in 1872 (when he was 73/74 years old!!!) names his father as John Bailey. Thus I have looked for a baptism at Awre around 1798 of a William Bailey with a father called John.

A baptism of a William Bailey in October 1797 names John and Susanna Bailey, nee Morse. They were married at Awre in 1794 and had four children. Susannah 1796, William 1797, John 1801 and Henry 1810. Susannah died, presumably giving birth to Henry Bailey in 1810 and Henry died, aged 3 weeks, 3 weeks after his mother.

I've followed the fates of my William's putative siblings, Susannah Bailey 1796 and John Bailey 1801 in the hope of finding a definite link between them and my William Bailey 1797 to prove he was their brother. But no link has been found. That was why I wondered if the 1818 marriage of William Bailey and Elizabeth Charles involved their brother. If it had then I would not be able to progress with this line of enquiry and would have no information about my ancestor's parentage. Sadly I can't find anything on them after their marriage so I can't rule them in or out!

I'm not sure of the relevance of the marriage you include in your reply to my query, however, it gives me another line of enquiry that I hadn't found.

Thank you

Ralph

William Bailey bapt. 1798 Awre

Hello

I am trying to confirm that my ancestor William Bailey was the same man as the one baptised in 1798 at Awre, the son of John Bailey and Susanna Morse. If he is then he moved to Monmouthshire and married Mary Morgan having four children in Llantrisant and Langstone before she died in 1829. He remarried (twice) and died at a grand age in 1890 at Bishton. He started life as an Ag Lab eventually becoming a tenant farmer in his own right in Bishton.

The problem is that a William Bailey married an Elizabeth Charles at Awre in 1818 and there are one or two other William Baileys in and around the Forest of Dean and I have been trying to eliminate them as the sons of John Bailey and Susanna Morse.

The reason? My William Bailey is recorded in various census entries as being born in Arvington (doesn't exist???) Aust and Awre. I believe he came from Awre and is the person baptised in 1798 but I want to eliminate other candidates.

Does anyone know what became of William Bailey and Elizabeth Charles?

Ralph
