Parents often seemed to do this, as is frequently seen in the old birth registers (my "former" life before retirement). Can create a good deal of confusion for us descendents, but a great sense of achievement when the correct ancestor is confirmed by patient research, as I'm sure you are finding.

There is also a baptism record for a Sarah Newton, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth for the 23 Nov 1771. Was it common to give a new child the same name as a sibling who had died?

Any thoughtson this would be appreciated.
