SAYSUM family where are they (reply)

The 1861 census shows Thomas and Mary Syceham lodging in How Caple. He is shown as being 20 years of age and born in Westbury. (From 1871 census Thomas becomes George).

80% of census information points to Thomas/George being born in the Westbury, Newnham, Littledean area in 1840.

Alice Saysom (my Great-Grandmother) was born 4-10-1864 in Hoarwithy and registered as Alice Sysam.

Sarah Saysom was born 9-9-1862 in Kings Caple and Registered as ALICE Saysom.

I can find no records of either childhood deaths or other births under any variation of Saysom that I can think of.

Sarah and Alice can be seen -Alice seated far right with Sarah next to her- in the Jackson/Saysom marriage group on www.sungreen.co.uk.

SAYSUM family where are they (reply)

I forgot to say that I found George Saysome in Lydney in 1901 - he was living with his son Samuel at 35 Queen Street. The surname is spelt Saysome, but is listed in the Welsh census for Monmouthshire (shades of 1911!)

There are some photos of the Saysome family on www.sungreen.co.uk, which has a lot of old photos of the Forest of Dean. Click on Lydney & district, and then Lydney page 2.

SAYSUM family where are they (reply)

This may be a bit rambling, but I thought you might be interested in what I have found out about the Saysome family through my great grandmother, Alice Saysome, who was born at Hoarworthy Hentland, Herefordshire on 4th October 1864. Her parents were recorded as being Thomas Sysam amd Mary Meredith - yet in censuses, her father was named as George, and that was the name on her marriage ceriticate to William Powell on 21st Sept 1884.

Thomas Sisam married Mary Meredith at How Caple, Herefordshire, on 21st December 1859, when his father was recorded as John Sisam, a Labourer. Thomas was listed as being of "full age".

This is where another complication arises regarding Mary Meredith. She was born in Ross on 25th November 1841, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (nee Mayo). James died on 8th April 1842, and Elizabeth re-married - Samuel Jones on 21st April 1844. On the birth certificates of George and Mary Saysome's children, Mary's maiden name is sometimes given as Meredith and sometimes as Jones.

George died in the Chepstow Workhouse on 16th May 1906. From the matching of certificates and census info, I can only assume that Thomas and George are one and the same - but I can't find a birth cert for Thomas either!

Thankyou i will certainly follow your idea up.there are so many variations of this name as i found out just looking at the parish records on this site.the earliest record i have is of george saysums c1840 [daughter sarah c1863]george himself died in 1906 aged 70 so his birth could be more like c1835.

SAYSUM family where are they (reply)

I wonder whether Saysum is a transcription error for the surname Leyshon, since the written capitals S and L are easily confused in old scripts. Leyshon and its variants is an uncommon Welsh surname.
