I have now received a letter back from the medical officer. Sarah was admitted in 1909 with the reason as pregnancy and she stayed there until her death in 1933.

I am now having trouble with the fact that the 1901 and 1911 census state that she was born in 1876 but the 1881 census has Sarah as being born in 1866 which is 10 years difference. Her parents are defintely Thomas Davis (1825-1912) and Margaret (1841) and this is what the census in 1881 states but with a difference of 10 years in Sarah's birth date.

There is no record of Sarah Ann the child on any of the census returns though?

I have contacted the Glos NHS Partnership Trust for information on her committal to Gloucester Lunatic Asylum so it will be interesting to see what they say. I have also ordered Sarah and Henry's marriage certificate so this may give me some more details.

Thanks so much for all of this info!

I was unable to get a copy of their marriage cert as didn't know their date or year of marriage but as I now do I will order it. I did know that Henry's father was John and his mother was Mary.

It is possible that Sarah was not born Davis - was this common for people to change their name or maybe she was a widow?
