Hi Linda

Good to hear from you. I knew Douglas Gatfield had moved to Australia as I am in contact with your relation, Peter Williams, grandson of Christine Gatfield, now living in New Zealand. However, I have no other information on your family so perhaps you could click on my e-mail envelope and write to me and I will get back in touch. I have photos of Emma's grave in St Briavels churchyard and if you have not seen this I can send it to you. Peter actually told me about it so we visit it when we are in the area. There are some Selby photos in the photo gallery on this site if you have not seen them yet. I have about 6 files on the Selbys and am at the moment updating them so I can probably give you loads of information.

Emma Selby was my husband's grandfather's sister. He was George Maurice Selby.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

SAYES from Tidenham and Ellwood area (reply)

good morning Sheila,

I only recently joined the Forest of Dean family history forum. My name is Linda Gatfield, Douglas Gatfield was my father, and Emma Selby was my grandmother. I was surprised to read that another Linda Gatfield had been in touch with you, although I know that there is someone with the same name as me who used to live in the same area in Sydney.
I am very interested in finding out more about the Selby family. Emma and William Gatfield had two sons and two daughters. Douglas emigrated to Australia in 1966. My sister and I live in Sydney, but both my parents died some time ago.
i would love to hear from you.
Regards
Linda

Jane SELBY 1790 Hewelsfield (reply)

Hi Slowhands

I was just about to write to you when I read this message. I had been looking at a similar one you posted some time ago re John and Jane Selby. On Findmypast I have only been able to find John on the 1841 Census living at Jolly on his own. You seem to have someone else with him. I cannot find Jane and the children at all even looking under Lebey and also street names. I wondered what your source was? I have only recently found out that there was a daughter, Jane, from someone else's research. If I had looked more closely at your previous posting I would have found her then. Although I had found her on the 1851 Census, I did not know who she belonged to.

I suppose that transcribers on different sites such as Ancestry, do read things differently. I have had to write to FindmyPast on several occasions to get things altered as it is obvious from the original that it was copied wrongly.

I have just checked Genes Reunited for the Australian family tree but I don't seem to have access to it anymore. I have e-mailed Linda to let me have access again. Will let you know when/if I get it. Her name seems to be Linda Walker so don't know where the Gatfield came in - perhaps I was asleep this morning when checking it although one could be her maiden name.

SAYES from Tidenham and Ellwood area (reply)

Hi Lynda

How are you connected to the Selby/Seys families? I had a quick look at my mail on Genes Reunited and the person I was in contact with was a Linda Gatfield in Australia. She had Emma Selby on her family tree but was not interested in that line of the family. I will have a further look at her tree later as I have to go out now but I was interested to see her name was Gatfield as Emma Elizabeth Selby, daughter of Enoch Selby, married William Gatfield from St Briavels and they had a son, Douglas Gatfield, who moved to Australia. I wonder if this is a coincidence or another link? I'm sure that she had a lot of Seys on her family tree but my memory may be wrong. However, I will do a further search later today hopefully.

I have a 'book' on the Selbys and am at present updating this so if there is anything specific you want, please let me know.

If you search for Selby in the Forum you will find quite a bit of information and also look at 'Hewelsfield our Village' on the downloads which includes information on Enoch and George Selby.

SAYES from Tidenham and Ellwood area (reply)

I do not know much about these families except that Emma Selby (1825), daughter of John Selby (1795) and Jane Darby, was married to John Seys from Tidenham on 3.4.1852 at Tidenham Parish Church. They had a child Elijah Seys, b circa 1854. John Seys died and was buried on 29.4.1855 at Tidenham. Emma then married William Jones in 1860 and they had three known children, William (1861), Richard (1864) and John (1866). Emma is related to my husband as John was his 4 x ggrandfather. I was in contact with someone on Genes Reunited from the Seys family some time ago who had Emma on her family tree. I believe she lived in Australia. I can look up my messages on Genes Reunited and find her if you would like her name.

You may know of above information already. I'm afraid I don't really know anything about the Seys family apart from what I have found in the Parish Registers and on the censuses. However, I have plenty on the Selbys.
