Sorry for the delay in replying but thanks for all of the fascinating info.

On William and Alice's marriage cert.his father is down as
William Walker deceased. Could it be that he was hiding the fact that he was illegitimate?

Witnesses were Evan Thomas and Catherine Stocker.

also just below this family is Charles WALKER (Mason) with his family

Possible Marriage.

John WALKER of Ruardean - married Sarah STERRY - Westbury - 8 March 1798 at Westbury - record on FOD

James and Catherine WALKER Lydney/TEAGUE (reply)

On Mary's marriages certificate, she states her father's was John - occupation Mason.

Just to confuse things....

1841 census, Broad Holes, Lydney

John WALKER - 40 - Mason (born in County)
Sarah - 43 (think this is John's second wife) *
John - 15 - baptised 5.8.1827 - John and Ann WALKER - occupation Mason
Mary (?) - a faint second initial - age 13

Marianne WALKER baptised 5.9.1829 - Lydney - John - occupation Stonemason - mother Anne

possible marriage:

John WALKER (Widower) married 'Sally' Maddox - 8 June 1834 Lydney

You will also find on the FOD records

John WALKER married Anne TEAGUE 18 October 1826 in Lydney: Witnesses: * William SPIERS and Mary SPIERS

Which I think connects with census information on this subject

So we have two brothers: John WALKER : christened Westbury on Severn 28 February 1802 and James WALKER - Westbury on Severn 1799 - parents John & Sarah WALKER

William WALKER born July 1856 Lydney

WILLIAM WALKER was my great grandfather. I have his birth certificate and baptism record but there is no mention of his father on either document so I assume he was illegitimate but I'm not sure how to find out who his father was.

He eventually moved to Cardiff to work at the tin works at Melingriffith.
I have his diary which records events while he was there but know nothing of his time in Lydney.

I assume he formerly worked at the tin works in the area - possibly Lydbrook.
His mother MARY ANN WALKER also came to Cardiff.

If anyone has any information I would be most grateful.
