Churching (reply)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churching_of_women

In Christian tradition the Churching of Women is the ceremony
wherein a blessing is given to mothers after recovery from childbirth.
The ceremony includes thanksgiving for the woman's survival of childbirth,
and is performed even when the child is stillborn, or has died unbaptized.

It was formerly regarded as unwise for a woman to leave her
house to go out at all after confinement until she went to be churched.
In the UK and Ireland, new mothers who had yet to be churched were
regarded as attractive to the fairies, and so in danger of being kidnapped
by them. However, the origin of the church ritual is unrelated to these later
local superstitions, which accrued to it.

Charlotte Treherne (reply)

In reply to the question "What does it mean for a woman to be Churched"

My son was born 1n 1967 and my dear old gran was still alive. A devoted church goer and observant of all the rules and regulations regarding church procedure.
My first port of call to show off the new baby was my gran's house. She did not have a telephone but some internal radar must have told her I was on my way as she was waiting for me at the door, which was as far as I got. Before I could say anything she told me that she would not let me in until I had been "Churched" and don't bother going to Mrs Beoumonts as she won't let you in either", door slammed in my face.
Stunned and unsure what to do next, I trotted off to my friend round the corner who explained that to be "Churched" after the birth of a child meant to ask forgivness for the sin of conceiving a child, or something like that.
Knowing which side my bread was buttered, or should I say where the lovely crispy Yorkshire puddings and onion gravy came from, I soon got "churched".
I dont think they do this now, our local Vicar said he had never heard of it, but he is only a young pup anyway and would not know a good Yorkshire pudding from a frozen one.

Charlotte Treherne (reply)

Can you help me trace Charlotte Treherne born in 1900 to George and Sophia. Sophia Died in 1901. I have traced all the other children in this family buti cannot find any trace of CHarlotte. On the 1911 census there is a child called Alice of the correct age. but I still cannot trace either Alice or Charlotte. All the children moved to South Wales when the father George died in 1913. Have you any suggestions?

TREHERNE family - Bream Meend 1841 (reply)

Hi Slowhands

Thanks very much, I had the baptism but not the 1841 Census. I have found that the Treherne name can be spelt with quite a number of variations, which makes tracing them difficult.

I can understand that Walter & George Treherne could be lodging away in 1871, but it would be great to find them in 1861 as proof that they are brothers.

Not that it is significant, but Walter Treherne also married a Sophia - Sophia Jane Barnard 4 Jan 1885 Forest Church. Walter Treherne being the illegitimate son of Charlotte Treherne, married Sophia Jane Barnard, who already had an illegitimate son James Barnard :

TREHERNE family - Camomile Green, Lydbrook (reply)

Hi Linda

Thanks very much for the info on the birth certificate. Although I have almost 1000 certificates, my research on this line has been largely with parish records and sometimes this can be subjective. The real answer is a birth certificate.

My great grandfather Walter Treherne was born 8 July 1854 Bream Meands to Charlotte Treherne, his baptism 13 Apr 1855 shows Charlotte "Single Woman" Father Not Stated. It is probable that Walter Treherne and your Great Grandfather George 1857 are brothers.

I need to get back to the drawing board.

I note that George was a boarder in 1871, have you found the census detail for 1861 ?

TREHERNE family - Camomile Green, Lydbrook (reply)

I think one of us has the wrong George Treherne. I have just received George birth certificate. My grandfathers father George was born 19/06/1857 to Charlotte Treherne . No father named on the birth certificate. I know that the Trehernes that lived in The rocks Joys Green are my correct family. William was my grandfather and Isaac who emigrated to Australia visited us in 1960. Also James family are still living locally near Caerphilly. I am also in contact with one of Lydias grandaughter. Hope this helps you.

TREHERNE family - (reply)

Hi Slowhands & Mike

This George is related but not the one you are looking for. He is the son of Joshua Treherne & Mary Jenkins married 31 March 1807 Lydney. Joshua Treherne is the son of George Treherne 1748 & Susanna White - see my other posting.

Joshua Treherne & Mary Jenkins also had a daughter Charlotte, who was my Great Great Grandmother, she had an illegitimate son Walter Treherne, obviously my Great Grandfather. Whilst searching the parish records the old fashioned way for her I came across this entry, fairly close to her baptism which you might find interesting, it certainly caused me to find out what "Churching of a Woman" meant :

Bream Chapel Rates at the time:
Burial of Parishioner 2s 6d
Burial of Forrester 6s 10d
Burial from another parish 15s 6d
Headstone 10s 6d
Tomb or Flatstone £1 1s 0d
Brick Grave £1 1s 0d
Burial in Chapel £10 10s 0d
Monument in Chapel £5 5s 0d
Churching of a Woman 1s 6d

My Grandfather contracted Scillicosis and the whole family moved to Croydon, where I was born. Apparently my Grandmother Jane Kate Treherne nee Marfell asked my mother if she had been "Churched" !!

Charlotte Treherne was lodging with Betty Beach in 1851, and it should be noted that her mother was Mary nee Jenkins and this was probably the connection as Betty Beach was nee Jenkins.

TREHERNE family - Camomile Green, Lydbrook (reply)

Hi Linda

My grandfather was Tom Treherne who married Jane Kate Marfell.

George Treherne would be my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. He was baptised in Dymock 13 Feb 1853, his parents were William Treherne & Eliza Waslin :

1851 Census Redmarley
William Treherne 36 Ag Lab Dymock
Eliza 36 Dymock
Harriett 6 Redmarley

I have the children for George & Sophia as shown on the 1901 Census, but no further details. But we are obviously related.

Whilst most of my research has centred on the Marfell Family, I have of course also researched the Treherne family. I have details of George's ancestors going back to James White born abt 1686 (LDS record only) He was the grandfather of Susanna White 1750 who married George Treherne 1748. George Treherne 1748 being the father of George Treherne 1774 who married Lucy Williams, their son William 1821 was the father of George Treherne 1853 who married Sophia.

I would be happy to share the details I have. Perhaps you could email from the link here.

TREHERNE family - Camomile Green, Lydbrook (reply)

thank you so much for this information. In 1901 there were three other children William Osborne (b1896) This is my grandfather who, I know nothing about. Martha (b1899) and charlotte (b1900). Sophia died in 1901. I had not been able to trace the family in 1881 Census. I can see why now. The spelling of the surname is different. I will get a copy of George Treherne birth certificate. It also seem that I have different date of birth for James. I have 1886.

Again thanks

TREHERNE family - Camomile Green, Lydbrook (reply)

I would like to know more about George Treherne. H e was born about 1858 i think. in Bream. On his marriage certificate to Sophia in 1879 it says his fathers name was Thomas Jenkins (a miner). I cannot find a birth certificate for George Treherne. Any information about him would be useful.

Thanks
