William RUDGE / PROBERT 1811 explanation (reply)

Sorry, no. Here they are on 1851 census at Scowles, Newland: James Probert age 66 ie 1785,(assuming he wasn't telling fibs) Ag Lab, b Goodrich, HEF, (ditto), Sarah 60, b West Dean.
On FOD Parish Records nothing under Goodrich: a few Probert sightings but no James.
There are 5 1700s baptisms for James Probert in other places.
1781 PROBERT James Baptism Newent
1790 PROABART James Baptism Bream
1797 PROBERT James Baptism Awre
1780 PROVERB James Baptism Lassington
1790 PROBERT James Baptism Lea
Awre and Newent are a fair step from Goodrich, but not sure about the others. Also FOD records are only for parishes in, or neighbouring, the Forest of Dean so if he was baptised in deepest Herefordshire he wouldn't necessarily appear on this site.

Good luck

William RUDGE / PROBERT 1811 explanation (reply)

I'm trying to trace the parents of JAMES PROBERT who married SARAH RUDGEin 1812. I see on the marriage notice that the witnesses were RICHARD PROBERT and MARY PROBERT. I wonder if these people wre James' parents or siblings?

Anybody got any info on this?

William RUDGE / PROBERT 1811 explanation (reply)

Oh no! Not the dreaded William Rudge/Probert!! Thanks for your efforts on this one Slowlands.
Woody - in case you are baffled, and who can blame you, a quick catch up! This individual was baptised, as Slowhands says, in 1811 as the son of Sarah Rudge. The following year, 18 Jun 1812, Sarah married James Probert. Whether William's father was James Probert or the butcher, the baker or the candlestick maker we will never know, but thereafter he used the 2 names interchangably, not only for himself, but also for his children - on the whole favouring Rudge for baptisms but Probert when the census enumerator came to call.
His wife was Maria Pewtner - I have shed loads of info on Pewtners if you need it.
However, going back to your original message, you say that "From the 1851 census it appears that GEORGE PROBERT was living in Coleford, Monmouth both George and his father were stonemasons". I've just had a quick look at Ancestry 1851. The George who is the son of the annoying William is transcribed as "Sebert", b app 1843 and living in West Dean. There are also Georges of similar age in Ruardean and East Dean, but I can't see one in Coleford, nor any that were stonemasons. So are we talking about the same George?

Thanks for the info.
I do know that GEORGE PROBERT had a brother EDWARD so it seems that the PROBERTS 1861 Berryhill Rd are my ancestors. Hopefully I will be able to trace WILLIAM PROBERT'S birth or baptism certificate and find out who his parents were.

George PROBERT born 1843 Coleford

I am trying to trace my great great grandfather

My great grandfather was GEORGE PROBERT born in 1843 in Coleford (Berry Hill?)
He married ANN SHAW at Grappenhall Chester in 1868 and some time later emigrated to South Africa.

From the 1851 census it appears that GEORGE PROBERT was living in Coleford, Monmouth both George and his father were stonemasons.

I would appreciate any help in this regard
