Edward Smith & Amelia Gwilliam 1843 (reply)

Yes,Benjamin arrived in Australia in November 1899 on the Omrah; he had travelled with his 25 year old half-brother Frank Smith (sometimes called himself Frank Brown). Amos arrived in 1901 on the Oruba. They all lived in Stockton (near Newcastle), NSW to begin with but Amos later moved to Sydney where he died in 1942; he had 3 sons but none appeared to have married (one died in infancy)and 1 daughter. Frank died in 1960, he had 4 daughters who called themselves Smith-Brown but I don't think any had children. Ben (my great grandfather) married Annie Matilda (Tillie)Hammond in 1902 and they had one child, my grandmother, Annie Amelia, in 1903. Tillie left Ben soon after; my grandmother was raised by her mother's mother and although she was raised just a few miles from where Ben lived she apparently never saw him. My own mother was shocked to learn that he had lived nearby. Ben applied for and was granted a divorce from Tillie in 1910; he never married again. Since I discovered all of this I have felt very sad for poor Ben, to have come so far and had so much hope for the future with a wife and baby and then to lose it all. His death certificate stated that he was divorced and had one child, Amelia; so very sad. That was why I went to see his birthplace; I hope it helps him rest in peace.

I am so glad you have been able to work that out. I must also be the 7x great granddaughter of John & Maria Smith as Edward & Amelia are my 3x great grandparents. I have just returned to NSW after 4 weeks in Britain but I didn't have time for indepth research. Managed to find Joyford Hill where my great grandfather, Benjamin Smith (1875-1946)was born and also found the church at Christchurch where he was baptised and Edward & Amelia are buried. Unfortunately the church was not open and there was no access to the churchyard so I couldn't see any of the graves. I tried ringing the doorbell at the adjoining vicarage but no one answered despite being able to hear someone inside practising the bagpipes!. The surrounding countryside was absolutely beautiful; I don't know how Ben and his brothers could bear to leave it but I guess times were hard and they thought Australia would offer a better life.

I too found this confusing! Son ELMS died in 1860, buried 9 sep at Christchurch, I have found that dates get corrupted when they are put on stones much later than the event so it is more than likely that it is him.

Richard SMITH 1821 (?) (reply)

Thankyou slowhands. I had thought he was a son of Richard and Sarah from English Bicknor; wrongly jumped to that conclusion but then realised that Richard was a woodkeeper and my Richard was a collier. Shame about that, i quite fancied the title "Keeper of the Forest of Dean"!
