Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

I have some information about Thomas Playsted. My husband is descended from Samuel Hewlett (1769-1852) through his son Samuel (1816-1880). The eldest child of Samuel Hewlett was Ann (1795-1851) who married Thomas Playsted on 29 December 1825 - registered at Newnham. They had 7 children between 1826 and 1839. At the time of their marriage his residence was registered at Aylford. Other information is as follows:

1841 census- occupation carpenter, residence Brains Green
1851 census - occupation carpenter, residence Woodside Cottage, Brains Green
1851 - death of Ann Playsted
1852 - death of father in law Samuel Hewlett - Thomas was an executor of his Will and the Playsted children were left a considerable amount of property which was bequeathed to the benefit of Thomas Playsted during his life time
1855 - marriage to Sophia Gibbons - occupation Builder
1861 census - occupation is retailer of cider at Brains Green
1871 census - occupation Inn Keeper at Brains Green
1871 - Thomas Playsted died at Brains Green (December Quarter)

Thomas and Sophia had 6 children from 1855-1867. The children from his first marriage would have inherited the property left by their grandfather Samuel Hewlett -this comprised real estate. The children of the first marriage took possession and Sophia and her children moved to Wales.

I can provide further information. Please let me know. The FOD site has most of this information together with the census.

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

PS I found death notices for Albert which refer to him as "the son of the late TH Playsted and Mrs Playsted of Woodside House Newnham". The marriage records for Thomas and Sophia indicate that Woodside House was her family's residence, so perhaps that is where she ended up.

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

I have a copy of the census of 1871 showing Thomas Playsted as innkeeper aged 75 with his wife Sophia, aged 39 plus 2 grown up children from the first marriage living with them along with 4 of their own children including Sophia's eldest son Moses Playsted aged 14.

Priscilla Playsted (nee Sainsbury from Pontypool) married Moses ( his name was Albert Moses Playsted). Blanche Playsted was their eldest daughter and my great granny. They emigrated to Tasmania in the 1880's.

Blanche said that Priscilla carried on like a great wrong was done to her mother who was thrown out of her home by her husband's children from a first marriage, after the husband died, but she may well have been referring to her mother in law i.e. Sophia.( since Priscilla's own father only married once). Blanche also said this lady who was removed from the house by the children was much younger than her husband that died.

If you know when Thomas died, how he came to be an innkeeper in the first place or where the inn was located,( or anything else about them) I would be most interested. I saw a document suggesting Henry Playsted was an innkeeper in the 1890's somewhere on line, so perhaps he did kick his stepmother out!

Kind regards,

Amber

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

Hi,

I have a Cissell Plaisted (born 1696 in Flemingston, Glamorgan). I had been given tentative info that she had married a man called Theophilus Thomas, but I cannot confirm if this is in fact true.

Cissell's parents were Edward Plaisted (b.1654 Westbury on Severn, d.1719 Flemingston, Glamorgan) and Cissell Andrews (b.1680 Flemingston; d.1710 Flemingston). Cissell and Edward were married in 1695 I believe and produced about 8 children!

I'm not sure if this is linked to the Cisely Plaistead you mention but it is possible..

Thanks

Hello Anne

Thank you for your reply, I think there might be a sideways connection
I am off on holiday shortly, when I return I will get the file out and
refresh my memory, I do have a lot of information provided by another
member of the family which might show the connection. It does show
thought that the connection is not with the other Thomas Plaisted.

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

Hello Cityblue.

This may muddy the waters a little, and I haven't done very much work
on this line of my family. I have some details that may be of interest.

In the 1851 Census against the address of Samuel Hewlett of Bradley House
Soudley - are the Hewlett family, there is a Maria Playsted shown as Neice
age 22. I have an edited note that Thomas and Anne Playsted where parents,
also a note that says Charles and Elizabeth Playsted emigrated to New Zealand in 1878. Iam afraid that I did not make note of where this information came from.

My main interest is the Hewlett line from Samuel Senior who died in 1852 to
Son Samuel, who married Louisa and had four children one of whom was my G.Grand
Mother Julia who married William Henry Vaughan.

So the query is what was Maria Playsted doing living as a Neice of Samuel
Hewlett is she one of the children you are looking for?.

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

Hi All

Interesting to follow this thread. As usual I am guilty of following siblings and parents of spouses too far. My interest here is that William & Mary Plaistead's daughter Ann 1828 married James Trigg 1822 - still not related, but their son Jessie 1855 married Constance Eliza Brain 1857 who is related to me and they had 10 children. James Trigg & Ann nee Plaistead's son David 1858 married Sarah Ann Acton 1860 still not related, but their daughter Rose 1883 married Lewis Harold Meek 1881, who is also related to me. He was the son of Richard Meek 1851 & Sarah Ann Cinderey 1857, who are both related to me.

Sarah Ann Cinderey was the daughter of William Cinderey 1825 & Esther Meek 1826. Richard Meek & Sarah Ann Cinderey had 9 children including Bertram Leonard Meek 1888 and is the subject of another much earlier posting :

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=9037#p9098

Census data for William Plaisted :

1841Census
William Plaisted abt 1801 Dean Forest
Mary Plaisted abt 1806 Dean Forest
Ann Plaisted abt 1829 Dean Forest
Elizabeth Plaisted abt 1833 Dean Forest
James Plaisted abt 1836 Dean Forest
Mary Plaisted abt 1837 Dean Forest
William Plaisted abt 1840 Dean Forest

1851 Census Westbury on Severn
PLAISTED William 52 Ag. Lab Westbury
Mary 47 Washerwoman Westbury
Elizabeth 17 Assistant Westbury
Maria 13 Scholar Westbury
Charles 8 Scholar Westbury
Harriet 5 Scholar Westbury
DEE Esther Lodger Widow/er 78 Westbury

Noting the early suggestion that Thomas Plaisted was baptised 1785 I discounted due to his age, then Chrislp provided the info about the Will.

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

Hi!,

Regarding your Post.

The Thomas Plaisted born 1860 does not appear to have ever existed.

The Thomas Plaisted who is the father of William Jemima and Esther is Thomas Plaisted born 1785 and died 1866 Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was married to Eiizabeth(Died 1834. He was buried at Caerwent,Monmouthshire, Wales.

The proof of this lineage is in the Will of his father Proved 1810. His father disapproved of his marriage to Elizabeth as he was only 15 years of age when William was born.

Children of Thomas Plaisted (reply)

Thanks to all who have posted information regarding my original request - lots of great and really interesting and useful information and certainly plenty I did not know ;-)) It will probably add a few more lines of enquiry to my list!!

Elfield - Thanks for that info - I believe that the Thomas Plaisted b.1856 was a direct descendent and if William b1801 is his son, then they definitely are. This would make a massive difference to my whole research.

Thanks as always to everyone for their help.

I have a Thomas Plaisted born about 1760 in Westbury on Severn. He married an Elizabeth (haven't found marriage yet).
They had 3 children:
William (Playsted) baptised 3 May 1801 Westbury.
(Plaistead) married Mary Davis 26 Sep 1824.
And the line continues - his son Charles emigrated NZ.
Jemima (Playsted) baptised 7 Aug 1803 Westbury
Esther Plaisted baptised 23 April 1809 Westbury
Don't know if that helps.
