Enoch SELBY - Inquest (reply)

Hi
The National Library of Wales has copies of all newpapers, I thought mine would be at Newport, but was told by them to try The National Library because where this person died was on the border between Monmouth and Newport.
I found them to be very helpfull and only a £1.00 to park
Regards
Gill Wise

Death of Enoch Selby (reply)

I now have a copy of Enoch's death certificate. He died of shock on 7.1.1912 as a result of an accidental fall off a ladder on 2.1.1912 causing concussion of the brain. He died at Merricks, Brockweir. Still hopeful of finding a newspaper report of the incident but, as yet, have not had time to do more research on this.

Enoch SELBY 1851 - 1912 - Inquest (reply)

Thanks for that information. I did try Chepstow to start with and they told me to go to Cinderford so that's what I did. However, I will try Newport if I don't come up trumps with the relatives.

Coroners Inquests held at Gloucestershire Archives (reply)

There appears to more than one set of Coroners Inquests held at the Gloucestershire Archives but you will need to contact them for the full details of what they have. The following is what I know of.

The Forest of Dean Inquests we have on the website are taken from "Minute Books" which are held by the Gloucestershire Archives. These Inquests cover the Forest of Dean area and are from 1868 to 1932 with a few missing years.

This project which was started by David Drinkwater is not yet completed and we are regularily adding more of these Inquest on the website.
http://www.http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/resources/inquests

The are other Inquests held at the Gloucestershire Archives which I believe are Records from the County Coroners, these include registers of inquests and inquest files but are not complete. Some records between 1722 to 1838 have been transcribed by Patsy McMillan and she kindly agreed to allow us to copy the ones that were relevant to the Forest of Dean and display them on our website.

These records you can browse by selecting Inquests in the Category drop down box of this forum. There are a 11 pages of these inquests, each page contains approximately 25 Inquests.

Enoch SELBY 1851 - 1912 - Inquest (reply)

As far as we know the accident took place in the Forest somewhere. He married Sarah (his second wife) in London in 1896 as on the 1891 Census she was a cook working for a pawnbroker and his family in Hampstead but was actually born St Briavels so that is presumably how he knew her. They had seven children before Enoch died in 1912. In all the Censuses from 1851-1911, Enoch is living at Hewelsfield so why he went to London to marry Sarah, I don't know. I have done all the family history as regards the facts but it is the stories in between which are eluding me at the moment. Hopefully we might find out more about the death when we visit a relative in the Forest next week.

Enoch SELBY 1851 - 1912 - Inquest (reply)

We know that Enoch was supposed to have fallen while working and broke his back but when I saw on his burial record there was a Coroner's report, I thought I would try to get a copy. However, as I said I was told the records for the Forest of Dean Division "did not survive" so how then are they being posted here unless it was a particular section/area of the Forest that was missing.

I have been to Cinderford Library and looked at The Forester but could not find anything which I found strange as Enoch was a well known Mason in the area. However, those microfilm machines always run away with me so I may have missed it! What other local papers are there which might contain this information? I suppose it means going to the Gloucester Records Office to search them out.

I have not yet sent for the death certificate but will be doing so shortly.

Enoch SELBY - Inquest

Can you solve this puzzle? I have been trying to find the Coroner's report on Enoch Selby who was buried on 13 January 1912 in Hewelsfield. In 2007 I contacted the Gloucester Archives and was told tht the "Coroner's Inquests of the Forest of Dean Division from March 1805 to January 1916 have not survived". As the records you are recording here are within these dates - is there some other reason why I was given this information?
