Beard family - possible connection (reply)

Hi PeterEssex from PogleSuffolk!

Not sure we have a connection although that's not to say further back than I've been able to go there isn't one.

My family lived in Regent Street Lydney. The other family names are Coslett which was passed to my mother's generation and Pullen which went as far as my grandfather's. Very few of the Beard family had children from my grandparetns generation onwards and can't find an ovbious to your lineage I'm afraid. Prior to that generation I've traced the family to other parts of Gloucestershire outside FOD.

This site has been brilliant in terms of the information available and the very helpful people who use the forum.

If you've exhausted what's here, not sure if you've seen the site of memorial inscrptions where Alf Beard has transcribed those in Lyndey cheurch. I found my g Grandparents details (Charles and Hannah) on the site. There are a few other Beards there too.

Beard family - possible connection (reply)

Just seen your post of 19/08/09 and wonder if we could be distantly related.

My paternal grandmother Frances's maiden name was Sterry (sometimes spelt Sterrey) and the family home was 29 Albert Street, Lydney. My grandmother had a sister Evelyn Ivy (generally called "Ivy" or within the family "Eggy") who had a daughter Flo (presumably Florence) by her husband Tom Salcombe.

Flo married a Harold Beard who I understand was ostracised by the family over some kind of financial irregularity around the early 1950s - I remember as a small boy that we were sent what I believe to have been a copy of the Lydney Observer publicising Harold's indiscretion but I have not so far found the article in the newspaper archives at Cinderford library.

Harold and Flo when at 29 Albert Street had a son Peter Beard who I believe has died. I would put Harold's aged in the early fifties as very approximately 35 if he was about the same age as Flo, whilst Peter Beard would have been born in about 1945.

I have no other trace on related Beards, but while examining gravestones in Lydney churchyard a couple of years ago I noted a grave of one Albert Beard, died 1960 aged 88, having been resident at 16 Albert Street.

PS Samuel BEARD 1824 Arlingham ( littledean) (reply)

Thanks very much Chris.

From what I've been able to establish, The Samuel you've found isn't part of my Beard family - that's not to say further back in the lineage there is a link. The story of how the Samuel you have found met his end is very touching nonetheless.

I have been going round in circles for about a few weeks now trying to trace back beyond Samuel's father Nathaniel. From some information slowhands provided and what I have found on IGI and census data, Nathaniel was Christened on 14 May 1809 in Framilode. His Parents listed on IGI are William Beard and Mary. Nathaniel had a brother William who was also born in Framilode in 1800. Unfortunately, IGI shows his parents as being Willim and Elizabeth. Of course this could be correct but I've not yet been able to trace a death or marriage that would tally this up. William has a relationship of Brotehr to Nathaniel the head on the 1861 census and then a a lodger with the Edwards family in High Street on the 1871 census.

Here's the 1881 entry -
BEARD, Hannah Head Widow F 70 1811 No Occupation
Lydney
Gloucestershire VIEW
BEARD, Wm Brother In Law Widower M 83 1798 Pauper No Occ
Framilode
Gloucestershire VIEW

I believe William died in Lydney in 1882.

PS Samuel BEARD 1824 Arlingham ( littledean) (reply)

Hi pogle and slowhands,

I visited FOD last Sep 2008 chasing up my Hale family tree. The Hales were from Littledean and intermarried with Beards a couple of times!

Edward Hale, b. abt 1660, m. Hannah Beard 20/11/1682 Hardwicke, Glos.

I have researched Hardwicke and there were many Beards in Hardwicke over the next 100 years or so.

Another Edward Hale, b. 15 Dec 1706, d. 1765 Littledean, m. 1728 Hannah Beard, b. Littledean, d. 3 Feb 1758 Littledean.

The incident that slowhands refers to re. Sergeant Beard is recorded in St. Ethelbert's churchyard on the Sergeant's headstone which I photographed at the time and is still clearly legible. (So many of the others are not as they are made from a 'soft' local stone which is prone to weathering.)

Hope this is of some help.

Chris.

Beard family (reply)

Thank you very much for the post.

From what I've found so far, Samuel b Mar 1836 and buried in Newerne Jan 1916. His parents were Nathanael (sic) and Ann. Nathanael was born around 1809 so could be a younger brother although estimating his birth year around 1824 makes it a bit bit unliekly due to the age gap. Nontheless, gives me another avenue to explore which I'll certainly do.

The Samuel I've tracked back to was married to Dinah Pullen in about 1864 and they had 4 children born between 1869 and 1872.

Thnaks again for taking the time to provide the information.

Thanks Again. I'd got those, it was also great when I'd found them to use the mapping feature on some sites to see where they lived. What I'm struggling with are the records for Samuel and Dinah's generation (and beyond) - that's I guess where experience will come in and extra tips like those you've provided are priceless. I've gone from knowing only my Grandfather's dob and dod a few weeks back to identifying his brothers, sisters, prents etc. back to my great great grandparents Samuel and Dinah - it's very rewarding but quite addictive!!

Beard family

Hi,

My mother's family name is Beard. I've been researching that side of the family and have been able to go back to Samual Beard (b1836 d 12/1/1916) married to Dinah Beard - maiden name unknown - who was born in Lydney (d 12/10/1917). They had 4 children, 2 borther survived beyond the age of 22. Charles edward, 1866 - 1942, buried in Lydney Church who was married to Hannah Jane Beard - maiden name unknown - 1865 - 1930 and also buried in lydney church. The other brother was Henry George Beard b 25/6/1876, married to May Beard. He owned \ managed the Collesium cinema in Cheltenham between 1919 and 1946. If anyone has any information I'd really appreciate it. I live in East Anglia so it's difficult to get to serach local archives in person and whilst the internet is a fantastic resource it has it's limitations.

thank very much.
