John GAMMON 1545 Dymock ? (reply)

Hi Slowhands,

Thanks for looking this up for me. However, I am looking for a lady by the name of Johan GAMMONDD. You are probably right that she was baptised in Dymock as I found these:

Alis GAMOND baptised 27 Sep 1551 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents Edmund & Jone GAMOND (FofD)
Rychard GAMOND baptised 23 Dec 1563 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents Edmund & Jone GAMOND (FofD)
Thomas GAMOND baptised 30 Jun 1566 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents Edmund & Jone GAMOND (FofD)
Hunfraye GAMOND baptised 22 Sep 1577 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents John & Alees GAMOND (FofD)
Elnere GAMOND baptised 2 Mar 1577/78 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents Edmond & Joane GAMOND (FodD)
John GAMOND(E) baptised 27 Sep 1579 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents John & Ales GAMOND(E) (FofD)
Margaret GAMOND baptised 30 Apr 1581 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents Edmond & Joane GAMOND (FofD)
Sibble GAMOND baptised 29 Apr 1582 Dymock, Gloucester. Parents John & Ales GAMOND (FofD)

I had thought it was probably a safe bet that her parnts were Edmund & Jone GAMOND of Dymock and they had moved to Much Marcle before Johan married in 1570. But knowing of other GAMOND couples baptising in Dymock (your William & Annis and I also found Ric & Kateryn in 1541) puts a different light on it. Now I really need to find her baptism.

I've never been very good at looking up film/fiche numbers at the LDS, lol so at least I now have the film number that I can order in if needs be. Do you have any idea why there is a second citation of the same records showing "Film: NONE"?

I already did a search of the IGI both through the LDS site and through Hugh Wallis' site and neither has the marriage which is shown on the FofD site as:

I was hoping that someone who had the film could take a look for my elusive "Johan" who most likely will be Johanna, Joanna, Joane, Joan or Jone.

Many thanks for all your help.

Parish registers were started in England in 1538 (reply)

Hi Admin,

Many thanks for a review of the history of the parish registers, but that wasn't exactly my question.

Do you or your transcribers have any records earlier than 1556 that you are going to transcribe, or do the extant records of the Parish of Much Marcle, Hereford start in 1556.

I am looking for the baptism of Johan GAMONDD, wife of James YEMM who was baptised c. 1550 (calculated from date of marriage in 1570).

Alternatively, if someone has the earlier records, could they have a look for this baptism as I would love to know who her parents were.

Parish registers were started in England in 1538 (reply)

Parish registers were started in England in 1538. A law was passed ordering the clergy to record baptisms, marriages and burials, and that they should be written down in a book after the service on Sundays, and in the presence of the Churchwardens. Before this date there were no records, except for a few created by monks who recorded the events for prominent families. Many churches, however, did not begin keeping records until a further notice was sent out in 1558, and even then, many did not comply.

In 1597, Queen Elizabeth I decreed at all existing records should be copied into "fair parchment books, at least from the beginning of this reign". There was considerable opposition. Many churches complained that they could not afford parchment books, others began the task, some started with the 1558 records, some omitted large sections as the task was too large, and some did not start at all.

Some of the early 1538 records (re-written in 1597) still exist, but it is not at all unusual for the registers not to have been preserved. Many were lost, and it is quite common to find no preserved records for a parish until a much later date.

Do the parish registers start in 1556

Many thanks for the parish registers of Much Marcle. I have a question. Do the parish registers start in 1556 or are there earlier records yet to be transcribed. I tried to look up the dates of the parish registers at the LDS site, but they don't seem to know anything about the 1500s.
