Briscoe's (reply)

I would be interested in the information you have and will send an email via the link.

A descendant - of sorts - via a complex relationship Briscoe/Thomas/Mountjoy, Owen Robinson Briscoe born 4 Dec 1889, son of Elizabeth Sophia Mountjoy Thomas 1855, married my Great Aunt Bernice Lily Marfell 1890 in the Register Office Westbury on Severn 3 Feb 1904. They were on Hazel Hill on the 1911 Census but moved to South Wales, Owen and his wife Bernice were both buried in Abertillery.

Regarding the complex relationship; I have the birth and marriage certificates for Owen - Owen Robinson Thomas on the Birth certificate, Owen Robinson Briscoe on the Marriage certificate.

Elizabeth Sophia Mountjoy Thomas 1855 was the daughter of John Thomas 1827 and Mary Ann Mountjoy 1817, they married 7 Jun 1853. Following the death of John Thomas circa 1861, Mary Ann Thomas nee Mountjoy married William Briscoe 1825 on 21 Oct 1861.

It is thought a possibility that the father of the 9 children of Elizabeth Sophia Mountjoy Thomas 1855 was William Briscoe 1825, they were all born with the surname Thomas but changed their names to Briscoe.

Hello

May be of no use to you but I am also descendant of Wlliam and Johanna and then William and Sophia --- I have traced that particular line through to South Wales (and my own grandmother who was a Briscoe).. if of interest I can provide relevant details.

BRISCOE - MOUNTJOY / Sallow Valletts prior thread (reply)

It took many months and lots of hard work but Elizabeth Sophia Thomas who then became Elizabeth Sophia Briscoe born 1880 and married a Frederick Meek in 1897 and thus became Elizabeth Sophia Meek emigrated to New Zealand in 1920 with her son Leslie John Randolph Meek aged 17. After searching the New Zealand archives it says he became a school headmaster and retired in 1971. No date of death for him. On the 1911 census they are living in Quabbs Lane Drybrook. There is Frederick Meek (35), Elizabeth Sophia Meek (31), William Frederick Howard Meek (13) and Leslie John Randolph Meek (9) and when she emigrated 9 years later she just went with the youngest boy. No sign of the husband or the oldest boy. Can't find UK death records for them either. I am guessing that they both died in WW1 but after many searches of WW1 records I can't find either so it is purely a guess.

BRISCOE - MOUNTJOY ( MEEK ) (reply)

Many thanks for the info slow hands

The William you mentioned however is the William (b1825) not the William (b1795) who married Johanna Aylward. As Johanna was buried in St John's I would assume her husband would be also but I was hoping for confirmation.

Cheers anyway!!

BRISCOE - MOUNTJOY / Sallow Valletts prior thread (reply)

Cheers Slow hands.

Do you have any info on Frederick Meek and Elizabeth Thomas/Briscoe his wife. Can't find their deaths anywhere.

We visited the Forest last week and saw Sallow Vallets Lodge and also Hawthorns. It says Johanna Briscoe was buried in St John's Cinderford. As I'm not familiar with the area would this be St John's the Evangelist does anyone know? Also does anyone know where the William Briscoe (Johanna's husband) is buried?

Briscoe's

Hi all - new to this site. What a fantastic site it is.

My family dates back to the Forest of Dean. My great grandfather (paternal) is William Briscoe (registered as William Thomas at birth). His mother was Elizabeth Sophia Mountjoy Thomas and as far as we can gather his father was William Briscoe (b1825) from Kilkenny. We have done a lot of research and also obtained many certificates.

I am just wondering if anyone has any new information other than what is already on here. In particular I am surprised that there does not appear to be any photos of any of them. As many of them were forest keepers I would have thought that more photos would be available. Is there anyone out there who has any photos of this family?

Also my great grandfather William moved in with Frederick Meek after his parents died and I am wondering what became of Frederick and Elizabeth? Did they move away as I can not find any records for their deaths in the Forest area.

Any info would be gratefully received.
