Bertha Trigg actually moved to Bath by the time the 1881 census was taken. Her younger sister Emily (my great grandmother) also moved to Bath and they both married here.

Re your question about my relationship to the Triggs. My main area of research is the Marfell family. Thomas Trigg's mother was Mary Marfell. I follow all the spouses of Marfell's and their siblings and parents. I have 300 Trigg's in my Family Tree. Thomas would be my 1st cousin 4 times removed.

Hi Jim,

I cannot find another Thomas and Sophia TRIGG - hence my concern over the delayed marriage in 1866. I do have 2 other children (twins?) who were both baptised on the same day, namely Bertha and Richard Lewis. (see below).

I also had Esau as Evan. I could not find his baptism until I tried the Esau version. However, Slowhands highlighted the registration of Bertha as Bertha BADLWIN and Evan as TRIGG in his earlier posts. I guess Richard must have died.

All other children in my tree match your list.

Re: deaths. I have a burial for Rhoda in 1882. (see below). I will check out the others.

Thanks again for your support. Are you related to the TRIGG's?

Thomas TRIGG 1837 Drybrook Wigpool / Stenders (reply)

I have 10 children for Thomas Trigg & Sophia nee Baldwin in my Family Tree, and this does not include Bertha. The first baptism I have is for Esau 25 Jun 1865.

Please note the census detail I posted last time includes the 1861Census showing Thomas Trigg & Sophia, this either means they were living together in 1861 or there is another Thomas Trigg & Sophia.

Note also that I have a Beata baptised 12 November 1869. This translates to the Beatrice shown in the 1881 Census entry. But no Esau or Bertha in 1881. I cannot find baptisms for all of the children I have for Thomas & Sophia. My guess is that Esau & Bertha subsequently died young and it is for that reason they were baptised. I have found this with other families. The death rate for infants was great in those days.

The children I have are Esau 1865, Rhoda 1868, Beata 1869, Emily 1872, Nora 1874, Othela 1878, Edith 1879, Edward 1883, Blanch 1887, Thomas Edward 1889.

A trawl through the deaths would be interesting.

For the official BMD they use Baldwin for Bertha in 1863 :-) although Evan is "officially" a Trigg in 1865

Slowhands & Jim,

Thank you for your rapid and comprehensive responses! Really appreciated.
It does seem as though they married several years after the birth of their first child. I can understand not telling the census enumerator everything - but how would they have got away with baptising Bertha in Drybrook,1863. Wouldn't they have been known by the priest? Anyway - you have helped me through a barrier and I am really grateful! I wish I had found this forum sooner!!!

Thanks again both.

Marriage of Thomas TRIGG to Sophia (abt 1860)

Hello,

This is my first post. I am struggling with the marriage of Thomas TRIGG to Sophia. The 1861 Census for East Dean shows Thomas (22) married to Sophia (21). I found baptisms for Bertha TRIGG d.o. Thomas & Sophia TRIGG on 25/12/1863 and subsequent children.

However, the only marriage I have found is from searching parish records on this site (see below). This puts the marriage date at 1866 (much later than the census and baptism records) and a little way from home parishes of East Dean & Abenhall (according to census returns). FreeREG and FreeBMD revealed nothing. Can anyone shed any light?

I am also seeking Thomas' father. Current thoughts are that he was Benjamin TRIGG (b~1768).
