No I'm not related but do have an interest in Scowles school history. Two of Tom Morgan's children are on the school register for 1883 and 1886.
I have sent you an email with a more 'long winded' reply.

Hello Nick,

We may be distantly. Reason I wrote something is because you mentioned Newland, Redbrook and Coleford.

My greatgrandfather's wife was Susannah Carpenter c1788-1859. Her sister Mary 1793-1864 married a James Morgan at All Saints, Newland in 1811. James Morgan died 9Jan1874 aged 82 or 87 (Memorial stone in All Saints churchyard unclear). So, James Morgan would be the nearest connection. Out of curiosity, I looked at IGI and seemed to be able to track him back without difficulty to 1500's. Devon or Somerset. This is a long time ago so my memory is vague. Might be worth looking up Somerset IGI if following Morgan's are your Morgan's.

Found some more detail:-

Have you checked the IGI at your local library? Before 1837 you might get lucky.

I had Morgan relatives by marriage, resident Redbrook (The Incline), Newland, buried at All Saint's, Newland. I looked at IGI and the line jumped off the pages back to 15 something, initially Gloucestershire then Somerset.

Just a thought.

THOMAS & EMMA MORGAN Coleford (reply)

Hi Nick
Here is briefly what I know. (If I have the correct family!)
Thomas Morgan was baptised at Newland on January 31st 1836.
He was the son of cordwainer (shoemaker) and Newland’s Parish Clerk Richard Morgan (born 1793 Newland) and Sarah Bargum from nearby Redbrook.

Thomas was apprenticed as a wheelwright to his brother in law Edward Lear at Kingsteignton in Devon according to the 1851 census.

Thomas, now a wheelwright & carpenter, married another Morgan at Colford in 1873. She was Emma Morgan (born 1840) from Coleford, daughter of post-boy – William Morgan according to the marriage record.

They had at least four children - George (1874),
Bessie (1877), Mary (1884), Lily (1886), and an adopted son Edmund Morgan (born 1864).

Edmund married Staffordshire born Mary Ferneyhough at Newland in 1888 and followed in his father’s trade as a wheelwright. He settled in nearby Redbrook.

George was an apprenticed blacksmith in 1891. On the 1901 census he is a farrier, married to Sarah and living in Croydon, Surrey.
