Edward John Carpenter (reply)

Thank you very much for your replies to my question.

I came across a newspaper article which my Mother had and it reads:-

Happy Birthday Ann!
Mrs Ann Weyman of Ruspidge this week celebrated her 103rd birthday. Born in Cheltenham, she moved to the Forest of Dean when she married Forest miner Edward Carpenter, her first husband. Despite a fall three years ago, when she broke both wrist and a hip, Mrs Weyman is a regular visitor to Dilke Hospital and the Highview Centre. Unfortunately though, she is no longer able to accompany her family to matches at Cinderford Rugby Club, of which she is a great supporter.

My mother has written at the bottom of this article "Annie Carpenter - Aunt of A.E Drew March 9th 1990/Dec 1992
(I dont know what the dates refer too and unfortunately I can not ask my Mother)

A.E Drew is my Grandfather
The Mother of A.E Drew is Mary Jane Carpenter 1877
So Annie would have married Edwin/Edward John Carpenter 1879

1881 Census
Caroline CARPENTER Other M Female 28 Forest of Dean Domestic Servant
Mary Jane CARPENTER Other Female 4 Forest of Dean
Edwin John CARPENTER Other Male 2 Westbury on Severn
Rose Matilda CARPENTER Other Female 3 m Westbry on Severn

I would really like to find out more about Annie (maiden name) and hopefully I will one day.
Maybe I will try an ad in Dean Forest Mercury as my Mother did many years ago for family members.

Thank you once more
Gwenn

Thanks Mike, you are an absolute star !
How intriguing that the Weyman-Carpenter link crops up so often, yet doesn't seem linked with the 1963 St Albans record I found.

One question if I may, in perhaps the same way the name Harry is with Henry, do you or anyone else know if Edwin is a derivative of Edward ?.

Edward John Carpenter (reply)

Continuing on from my previous post we find that there is a Family Tree on Ancestry which suggests that Edward John Carpenter married Annie James in 1913. This is from the Index:
Marriages Dec 1913
Carpenter Edward J James Pontypridd 11a 1188
James Annie Carpenter Pontypridd 11a 1188

This does not appear to be straightforward. First of all Edwin was registered and baptised as Edward:

Moving on to 1901 we find the Byett family still in Ruspidge:

Edwin John Carpenter (reply)

Hi Gwenn,
please can you add whatever extra info you have about these people, ie time and place ?.
I have searched both this site's PRs and GlosBMD without finding any Edwin John Carpenter at all, altho I have found an Edwin James Carpenter marrying in Cinderford in 1915. I've also searched FreeBMD but none of the Edwin John (or James!) Carpenters listed (before 1911) marry an Anne. After 1911 that site doesn't include full second names, so he could be any one of several "Edwin J Carpenter"s listed after that. I cannot easily find him in any prior threads on this forum.

From FreeBMD here's the marriage record which you've found, which at least points towards a time and place, being relatively recent means there will be less records available;

Surname First name(s) Mother/Spouse/Age District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1963 (>99%)

CARPENTER ANNE [E-] WEYMAN ST.ALBANS 4B 487
WEYMAN FREDERICK J CARPENTER ST.ALBANS 4B 487

From the record image I think she is definitely "Anne E"
The other FreeBMD records suggest Frederick was not born near Gloucestershire or even the West Country.

So if you have any more info it would help, please, thanks.

----------------

UPDATE:

Looking at all the FreeBMD marriage records for all the Edwin J Carpenters post 1911, I now find this record which MAY be your Anne, but needs further work to be sure. Don't know why my search earlier didnt spot this, sorry !

Squires Annie E Reading 2c 807

FreeBMD shows birth records for several! Anne E and Annie E Squires in the likely 1880-1890 era, none are from our area at all, or Reading for that matter.
This also places some doubt on the 1963 Marriage Record being for our Anne aged 65+

?????

==================

IMPORTANT FURTHER UPDATE AND APOLOGY !

Clearly havinbg a bad day here, despite my "reading" the earlier posts in this thread I didn't see this rather obvious clue, SORRY Gwenn !

The 1881 Census tells us that his wife Caroline and 3 children were in the Workhouse at Westbury on Severn:

Caroline CARPENTER Other M Female 28 Forest of Dean Domestic Servant
Mary Jane CARPENTER Other Female 4 Forest of Dean
Edwin John CARPENTER Other Male 2 Westbury on Severn
Rose Matilda CARPENTER Other Female 3 m Westbry on Severn

I cannot find his Birth record c1879 on FreeBMD, including searching "male Carpenter" etc.
Apart from confirming the above 1881 Census record, the usually helpful FamilySearch site doesn't give any more hard clues that I can find, apart from suggesting an "Edwin John Carpenter born England c1875" and his wife (not Annie) migrated to Canada in 1920.

Sorry for my confusion, busy day here, I'll try and revisit this again this evening.
J

Job Carpenter (reply)

A search on the Castle Garden website http://www.castlegarden.org suggests that Job sailed to the United Sates in 1880. Here is the entry:
First name Last name Occupation Age Sex Arrived Ship Origin (Port) Origin (Ctry) Origin (Prov) Origin (Town)
JOB CARPENTER COLLIER 26 M 18 Aug 1880 SCYTHIA LIVERPOOL & QUEENSTOWN GREAT BRITAIN ENGLAND

Source Information:
Institution "Workhouse" Westbury On Severn
Census Place Westbury On Severn, Gloucester, England
Family History Library Film 1341609
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 2525 / 153
Page Number 6

And it would appear that Caroline married again in 1887:
Marriages Dec 1887
BYETT William Westbury S. 6a 466
Carpenter Caroline Westbury S 6a 466

Hopefully someone can help in finding Job after 1880.

Good luck
Mike

A little tip (reply)

Many people find reading messages in all upper case (Capital) or lower case (small) letters laborious and as a result they skip the message and quickly move on to the next one.

Please read → Do not use all UPPER or all lower case letters
