My mother was raised in Ruardean and I have memories of many occasions when we visited relatives in the Forest and Ruardean in particular and my father (who was from Gloucester) would try to wind people up by saying "Who killed the bear?". His attempts at "humour" were generally not well received!

Does anyone know what was behind this ursine reference?
