Very old memory of Grandma's cottage. (reply)

I have just re read your info Fred and I apologise,- your info could very well be about my Grandad Harrison and maybe it could lead to clearing up our family history which stopped short only two generations ago on my dad's side. I have since been contacted by the forum regarding this and your info and it really is quite exciting. I need a little time to contact my siblings now here in Australia and then I'll get back onto it. Thanks very much for that new information. Cheers .Clive

Very old memory of Grandma's cottage. (reply)

Thanks Fred, I must admit that I am a complete novice at digging into family history although I think that the history you have found is for a different family.(that sounds confusing even to me,ha ha). I say this because I think my grandad Robert Henly Harrison assumed the "Harrison" name and so my family name and line of heritage stops right there and I dont think it is possible to trace it any further.Anyway, that was interesting reading and I'll forward it on to my older sister here in Aussi, although her knowledge of our family is not much better than mine..Cheers..Clive.

Very old memory of Grandma's cottage. (reply)

Hi Clive - Here's a little info that might set you on your way, I'm just looking locally so this all needs to be confirmed, certificates etc.
Robert Henry Harrison death registered 1955 Forest of Dean age 65
it looks like he married Irene Carter? registered 1917 Cheltenham
I can see two births registered Cheltenham, Robert F 1918, and Irene F 1921.
It also looks like he had a hard start in life
1901 census Robert H Harrison age 9, inmate Boys orphanage Cheltenham
*this would normally mean that parents have died.
Robert Henry Harrison's birth is registered Tewkesbury 1891 after the census of that year and this looks likely to be his parents family -
1891 census
address 3 Chance Street, Tewkesbury.
head - Frederick Harrison age 25, grocers assistant born Cheltenham
wife - Emily age 24, born Cheltenham
son - Percy age 4, born Cheltenham
daughter - Elsie age 2, born Bristol.
*It looks possible(likely) Elsie died this same year age 2, and that her mother died in 1895 age 28 registered Gloucester, and father Frederick died 1898 age 32 registered Cheltenham.
I think Percy age 14 is a servant(cow boy ag) not so far away in Herefordshire, it say's place of birth Stroud, but to me that's near enough, these census are often incorrect with age and place of birth, especially for servants.

Hope that helps, he probably moved to the Forest of Dean to find work, all you need to do now is try and confirm all this, and then I'm sure there are people here who can help you go back further. cheers Fred

PS a death certificate will give you an accurate address "Danby Cottage" if that's where he died, I think Danby is a surname around the forest so there could be several?

Very old memory of Grandma's cottage. (reply)

Ah, the penny is dropping, the Robert Henry Harrison (deceased 1955) was probably my grandad, although I think he was known as Robert Henly. I have never studied the family tree so I'm missing quite a bit.I think a trip back to Wales in the near future is on the cards so I can personally dig up the old cottage,- why there are several "Danby"'s has got me beat tho. It's approaching summer here now(going to be 27 Celcius tomorrow) so it'll soon be time to get out the snorkelling gear, hit the golden beaches and dive into the sparkling clear water whereas I suppose you guys will be pulling the snow shoes and sleds out. Thanks for that good info, Cheers, Clive.

Very old memory of Grandma's cottage.

Hello, Clive here,-I live in Australia.I'm 62 and left Wales when I was 8. I recall being at my Grandma Harrison's place which was a pebble covered cottage on a hill across the road from the Forest of Dean. I believe there was a hotel a little further up the hill. The name "Danby" cottage seems to stick in my memory.Does anybody know if this cottage still exists. My grandad's name was Robert I think and he worked in a local coal mine. it would be a real thrill to possibly get a photo of this place. Thank you, Clive Harrison.
