I am a descendant of Ebenezer Trotter. His son Harry Trotter was my great grandfather. I am tracing Ebenezer's history as I am coming to The UK in September and wanted to see where he came from. Ebenezer came to Australia with his mother and father in 1852 to Geelong on The Mercurius. Ebenezer married Mary Elizabeth Dear in Geelong and had 11 or 12 children (not sure on one of them Ern?) They moved to a gold mining town called Steiglitz where they died and are buried there. Ebenezer's parents are not mentioned in the graveyard of Steiglitz (there are 2), so maybe they stayed in Geelong which is not very far from Steiglitz.

Joseph TROTTER born abt 1800 Ross Hereford (reply)

Hi djones
Yes I have wondered the same thing myself and have tried to piece so many different Trotters together but to date have had no success. Josephs father was a James Trotter and he was a malster and have tried to connect him and Joseph to the Trotters from Coleford area thinking that they must be related some how. My thoughts are now that they must be cousins or nieces and nephews to one of them.

Thanks slowhands for your reply.
Yes Ebenezer was apparently born in Pengethley, but I haven`t been able to find any birth record of this. His father ,Joseph, was a city pavier as stated in the 1842 Pigots directory of Gloucestershire Address Ryecroft Street. Would this job mean that he would have to had to travel , hence the children not being born in the same place and no trce of his extended family ?
I have a copy of Josephs death certificate 1888 in geelong Australia and on that it states that his father was James Trotter, malster ,and his mother was Mary Lane. This sort of makes sence as there were other Trotters in Coleford area who where also Malsters but no James Trotter. Who knows????
I found a census record on find my past web site for 1841 that shows that Joseph,Mary ,ebenezer and Mary in the rego district of Glouster Union. The estimated birth years seem to be right . Is this the same record that you sent me?

Joseph TROTTER born abt 1800 Ross Hereford

I have been trying to trace this side of the family for about ten years now and have had not much luck with this fellow. What i do know is that he married Mary FISHPOOL and had two children that i know of Ebenezer TROTTER born abt 1829 in south wales and Mary TROTTER born in Coleford 1825(thanks to this website I did find this birth) Now Josephs father was James Trotter whose wife was Mary LANE and I have their marriage in Linton in 1778.What I am wondering is if the other Trotters in coleford are any relation to mine , I have tried to connect them but there seems to be gaps. Joseph and Mary came out to Australia in 1852 with their children Ebenezer and Mary where I found that Ebenezer`s occupation was Jeweller/watchmaker.I have found this on the census aswell 1841,1851.
This is about all I know but still have many unanswered questions
