Walcot Link (reply)

All

I have been researching my Jenkins family 1750 - 1800 Clearwell since 2005

The name is fairly common around the area but I have not been able to tie up some loose ends re the above period.

I have also found a Vaughan-Jenkins from Walcot, Bath, Somerset, Vaughan also being a name associated with the area.

I started exploring the links with the Bath area because a member of my family married at St Pauls & St Peters (Bath Abbey)during the early 1830's.

I do not have any other links to Bath although the dressing stone used for Clearwell church came from the Bath area, my family being stonecutters.

A large number of quarries existed in the Walcot area during the late 1700's and early 1800's. My family can be found in our parish records as Stonecutters in the early 1800's

I do not have any confirmed links to Walcot but am activly conducting research into any possible connection for the Teague Vaughan or Jenkins family especially anything which will link these families and Walcot, Redbrook, Whitecliff, Newland and Clearwell.

I will happily share any information with the group and hope likewise.

Those interested in m resaerch can contact me through my Jenkins family link through this web site

Regards

Tony Jenkins

Teague - Newport (reply)

The Teague name pops up ever now and then around here, but I can't recall the Teagues of Christchurch, Newport, ever being mentioned. I'm sure Slowhands will correct me if I'm wrong! At Christchurch cemetery there is a group of Teague burials. I was reminded of them during a recent visit to Newport when I picked up a guide to the church.
The headstones are very old and have now apparently been removed to the boiler room inside the church, but when I was a little girl they were still in the churchyard and "the old sailor" in particular was a source of great fascination.
His gravestone reads "Here lieth the body of Wm Teague the son of Ts Teague, who departed this life March ye 27 Anno Dom 1716
A sailor young I was now here below
I no more fear rough waves nor storms yt blow
I safe at anchor ride until yt day
When Christ shal say hoist sail and com away"
As Teague is a fairly unusual name, I wonder if this old sailor is connected to FOD Teagues?
The guidebook also mentions a Thomas Teag died Feb 8 1675 and Hannah, daughter of George Tege, who died Nov 8 1669.
I'm no relation to any of the above, but maybe someone is - I do hope so!

Edward Teague & Lucy Prosser (reply)

Hello Angela

I have done an indepth research of this family and Edward was baptised at Hope Mansell 23 Jul 1775 along with 9 other siblings the eldest sibling is James bapt 17 Mar 1760 who married Jane Evans, so they are siblings not father & son.

James who married Jane Hayward was bapt 27 Nov 1721 at Walford son of James & Elizabeth Croose. This family can be found in the area of English Bickner pre 1787 where their daughter Mary is buried, James & Jane are also buried at English Bickner. Edwards marriage licence also states he was from this area before moving to Berry Hill.

Edward & Lucy children were Jane 1808, Edward 1810, James 1813, Eliza 1815, Thomas 1818 & Mary 1823. both Jane & Eliza are my 2 x gt grandmothers.

If you can supply me with evidence to the contrary ie birth 1780 would very much appreciate it.

best wishes....Gill

Edward Teague born 1810 was son of Edward Teague baptised 1775 at Hope Mansel,
Edward born 1775 did have a brother John bapt 1765 also at Hope Mansel sons of James Teague & Jane Hayward who are buried at English Bickner.

No proof but possible,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Gill
