Strip and at it colliery (reply)

Dan married Rebecca Band in S. Africa. I understood he was a mining engineer and also a band master. From there they then came to Albury, Australia. Dan was quite a colourful character it would seem and joined an unusual movement leaving with a group of disaffected Australians to form a "socialist utopia" in Paraquay. Somehow he got the government to fund instruments for a band. The venture did last long before Dan had enough and left taking his musical instruments with him!
Can find out more on dates.

Hi Slowhands
Thank you for your replies, you have confirmed a number of facts/stories, however we were totally unaware of the baby(Conrad Orlando). we also thought that dan and emily never married and that Harry was illegitamate, did you see a record of thier marriage anywhere.
Once again thank you for all the info, this family history lark is certainly addictive.

Sarah KNIGHT (reply)

Several Sarah KNIGHT possibles are in the area in 1881 census
I suspect she was a friend rather than a "midwife" as such

A possible SARAH is the wife of Timothy KNIGHT, she is from the nearby Lydbrook area and was born Sarah Jane Taylor 1855 approx. The CHADWICKs were living in Lydbrook in 1871. Timothy's family http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=1697

Swan Inn Brierley (reply)

The Swan Inn is a whitewashed rendered building on the north side of the road.
There is a reference to a Quarrymans Arms at Brierley in 1853 which
‘was the meeting place of a Friendly Society.’ The pub got its name from a quarry
but custom also came from miners employed in the nearby collieries.

The White Swan is mentioned in Brierley a few years later located in a
‘former cottage by the road’. Whether or not this was at the same property as
the Quarrymans Arms is not clear, but by 1879 the premises had become
known as the Swan Inn.

Strip and at it colliery

Hi
I wonder if you can help....my Great,Great Grandmother (Emily Charlotte Chadwick) died giving birth to my Great Grandfather (Harry Chadwick) on 28th June 1876. On both the death and birth certificate the location is given as "Strip and at it". I am aware that "Strip and at it" was a colliery but am left wondering where the birth would have been likely to have taken place? Family stories state that Harry was born in a pub. Looking at the history on this site a pub called "The Swan" is mentioned... could this have been known by a different name in 1876? Emily was a domestic servant.
A Sarah Knight is stated as being present and a witness to the birth and death, do you therefore have any records as to whether she was a local midwife ?
Harry was the illegitimqate son of Emily and a Dan Barrett Pogson. Dan Pogson is shown on the 1871 census as a surveyor in East Dean ,we know he left Emily and went to Australia but we do not know when he left East Dean...are there any employment records that could possibly show any dates he was employed there?
I would be grateful for any information you may have to shed light on these issues.
Thank you

Michelle Rickerby.
