What evidence do you have that the Sarah Lane listed in the 1881 census as the wife of George Lane is actually Sarah Ann Collins/Webb? The birth date is wrong and the "blended" family only includes Lane children, not Mary Ann Webb who was a Webb child listed in the 1871 census?

WEBB and LANE Families (reply)

I think you may have the two Livinias mixed up. My Aunt Vinnie was the daughter of Isaac Collins and granddaughter of James Collins. She had three children, Wilbur, Muriel and Warren. From your description, your Lavinia was the daughter of Sarah Collins and also granddaughter of James Collins. That would make the two Li(a)vinias first cousins and Reginald Hillier and me second cousins. The generations were presumably somewhat longer in my branch of the family than in yours.

It certainly is a bit of a mystery - not sure how it can be solved, really!

If Lavinia (yes I've heard her referred to as Vinnie, too) was your aunt, that would make you the cousin of my late grandfather Reginald Hillier (Lavinia's only child).

WEBB and LANE Families (reply)

In the 1871 census, Isaac and Sarah Ann Webb (Collins) only have one daughter living with them: Mary Ann Webb. At that time the parents had been married 21 months. (They were married 21 June 1869 and the census date was 2 April 1871). Mary Ann's age is listed as 2 years old so if the census taker got the age right (by no means guaranteed) then Mary Ann was indeed born out of wedlock. That would also make her 22 in 1891 but doesn't explain why all her names were changed: Mary Ann to Jane, and Webb to Collins. Seems peculiar to me. However I can find no records of any other Jane Collins in that generation in any branch of the James Collins family.
By the way, in my branch of the Collins family (Isaac Collins, Sarah Ann's brother) there is a Livinia with an "i", not an "e". She was my aunt and was known as "Vinnie."

WEBB and LANE Families (reply)

Sorry to butt in on this one - only just registered this morning. Sarah Collins and George Lane were my Great(x2)Grandparents - through their daughter Lavinia (sometimes transcribed as Linna in census records). Just wondered whether or not you did, in fact, bite the bullet and apply for a marriage certificate, and if so what the verdict was.

Also - a point that's been nagging at me is that in 1891 Sarah is a widow and has reverted to her FIRST married name of Sarah WEBB. Living with her is a 22 yr old daughter going by the name of Jane Collins. Any idea why she would have given her daughter her maiden name - born out of wedlock maybe? Any snippets of help would be appreciated.

Andy

How Intriguing, and thank you for your reaction.
Not sure if you are looking at the register, if so are Sarah and George listed as widow(er). A second point against the marriage concerns the registration district. All previous BMD activity with the family has been linked to MONMOUTH.
And finally perhaps I should have considered my last point more carefully before
this. Both in the 1901 census and the 1911 Sarah lists herself as a WEBB.
Perhaps I may need to bite the bullet as they say and go for a certificate.
Your advice on these thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards
Norman
PS Your rapid reaction to my query doesn't match up to you SlowHands title.

WEBB and LANE Families

George LANE c 1838 from Goodrich married Eliza Johnson at Lydbrook in 1860. Eliza died in September 1875. Isaac WEBB c 1847 who married Sarah COLLINS in 1869 at Lydbrook also died in September 1875.
George LANE and Sarah are living with their joint families at Lydbrook in the 1881 Census. George died in 1889 leaving Sarah to bring up the family.
I have been unable to find signs of a marriage for George and Sarah.
Please can anyone tell me if there was a marriage?
Norman Elkins
