I should have checked that myself as I have the 1891 census. You are right, but the transcript has been checked and is correct at 1890, but was obviously written into the parish register incorrectly.

It appears from other records of the person that the year of the event is 1891. It would however be wrong for us to change the year that has been recorded in the register as we do a true transcript of the records and do not enter in our transcripts what we believe it should be in place of what has been written in the original record.

I've added the following note to the record which is in our website database.

"Other records indicate that the year of the event is 1891"

I have checked the 1891 Census entry and Alice is stated to be 3 months old. The 1891 Census took place on 5 April and 25 January 1891 was a Sunday. I would therefore suggest that the baptism took place in 1891.

Thanks for submitting the request which I have just answered but for the benefit of others I have copied my reply below.

I don't think you will ever be able to confirm the correct date of birth or baptisms for certain as things just were not all that accurate in those days and often incorrect dates were recorded in documents because it was convenient to do so.

I will consult with Graham on this one but I believe the entry we have as being stated as 1890 is correct.

I do not have copies of the originals to look at but I do have the transcripts and looking through them I noticed that the dates are generally not in order.

These are circuit records and what I think has happened is that the baptisms were preformed in different locations and then later the details were entered into a Register that was probably kept at a central location. The details arriving possibly months later in some cases at the central location from other places and this is the reason for them not being in date order.

I have now put through a transcription checking request - had not read through the website thoroughly enough to realise there is a system in place for this.

I have passed both of your information to this system, so perhaps it can get sorted out, although if it's wrong in the register itself, then my only option is to get her birth certificate.

I have just checked the original entry which is definitely entered as 25 Jan 1890 however as Slowhands points out the preceeding entry is 20 July 1890 and the following entry 17 Dec 1890, so there is probably a mistake in the register and the year should be 1891.

If we assume the transcribed records go in sequence then I agree Alice Ann was probably born late in 1890, perhaps December rather than January 1890 , and then the 25th is now out of sequence ! The image needs checking to see if its a transcription error or as recorded in the register.

I wonder if anyone could check the parish register for the West Dean Methodist Church - register reference D2598/3/5 page 8.

The transcript on this excellent web site has the Baptism as 25 January 1890 but the only birth index is Q1; 1891; Monmouth. I know that sometimes birth registrations are delayed, but I wouldn't have thought that it would be for 1 year. So I wondered if the year had been transcribed incorrectly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
