Seeking service records of Henry Samuel Coslett BEARD (reply)

Thanks both for your replies. I came across someone on the Gloucestershire regiment website who had the same welcome home medal so assumed there may be a fair few around and thought it worth a note. I guessed the service records may have gone, as so many had done, I just thought there may be some local FOD knowledge with regard to the medal or a list of those to whom it was presented which may build up the story.

Seeking service records of Henry Samuel Coslett BEARD (reply)

Hi

No, as Slowhands said 'don't give up hope'

I tried to get my granfather's but they were destroyed. However, I had a nice surprise when I sent for his WW2 ones, as a copy of WW1 were in there! Don't think it is the norm but you never know :)

Henry Samuel Coslett BEARD 1897 - 1969 Lydney (reply)

Sadly your records are probably in the destroyed portion ( but dont give up hope)

The British Army World War One Service Records are War Office (WO) records also known as the WO363 records and the ‘Burnt Documents.’ In 1940 there was a World War Two bombing raid on the War Office in London where the records were held. During this raid, a large portion (approximately 60 per cent) of the 6.5 million records was destroyed by fire. The surviving service records have become known as the ‘Burnt Documents’.

Seeking service records of Henry Samuel Coslett BEARD

Clive Thomas has sent me the following message with an image of a medal which was attached to a pocket watch and was presenteed to his granddad Henry Samuel Coslett Beard.

Can anyone assist!

Hi David,

Not sure if this is of wider interest, but I'm happy for you to share. If you have or can find any information or could point me in the right direction that would be fantastic.

I believe my Grandad, Henry Samuel Coslett Beard was in the RFC - I have a cap badge and the earlier picture I sent shows him in uniform. However, I've not been able to find any service record. I do have his pocket watch which has a welcome home medal at the end of it. Scan of both sides is attached. In case you can't see it, One side says "Lydney's welcome home", the other "presented to H Beard who served in the Great War 1914-1918".

Kind regards,
Clive Thomas
