1881 Census she is shown as Head but not shown as Widow

I wonder if Francis "wandered away" rather than died ?

He appears in Gloucestershire in 1871 for the marriage without an obvious "census footprint" - although FANNY was born in Hay, Breconshire

did he cross the river and re-marry ?

It is so easy to get carried away with people who are not actually related to you !! My only connection here is that Fanny Mullins second husband George Meek (Marr Reg Mar qtr 1896 Wx S 6a 344) was the brother of Amelia Meek 1874 who married my half 3rd cousin twice removed Charles Brain 1869.

I too discovered that Tabitha married Francis Mullens using the name Abiah Morgan. Although Francis must have died before Tabitha married Amos Hale on 25 Nov 1883, on the 1881 Census she is shown as Head but not shown as Widow :

Hi Braillemaker,

Although I cannot find the baptism you mention in 1881, it does of course make sense that Albert Edward was born 1881 as Tabitha married Amos Hale 25 Nov 1883. Interestingly she is shown as Tabitha Barnard Spinster. I wonder if she ever married Francis Mullins, their first child Fanny was born 1870 ** :

** True to form, Fanny Mullins had a child Sydney James Mullins 1893, before marrying ? George Meek and having a first child with him Rhoda Meek in 1896.

I presume 1891 was a typo? Albert Edward was christened 1881 in Mitcheldean.

Tabitha also has Albert Edward Mullins - he was born abt 1891 and died 4/27/1929 of heart trouble. My sister is in possesion of picture of his gravestone.

THank-you both for all the information that you posted. I never know my grandmother (Gertrude) Folts. I was born in 1950 and she died in 1951. While I did connect to her sister Lucy when I was 16 I lost touch. I dod have some written information that Aunt Lucy gave me. I would love to piece this all together - as I find it so very interesting.

First thanks to Slowhands for finding the baptism in the name Barnard, as daughter to what became her stepfather, it is quite possible that he was her actual father.

James Barnard was the son of William Barnard 1806 and Sophia Trigg 1805 married 1st October 1825.

Before Tabitha married Amos Hale, she had been married to Francis Mullins and had 5 children between 1870 & 1878. Fanny 1870, Mary Ann 1872, Edith Emily born Aug 1874, died Dec 1874, Eliza 1876 & Rhoda 1878.

Fanny 1870 married George Meek, son of George Thomas Meek 1848 & Hannah Barnard 1844.

Before Fanny married George Meek, she had an illegitimate son Sydney James Mullins 1893.

George Thomas Meek 1848 was born in prison son of Thomas Meek & Elizabeth Boughton, see my notes :

Glos.Quarter Sessions Feb.18 1848 Thos Meek not guilty, so obviously released. (offence took place Feb.16.1848).

Elizabeth Boughton exactly the same.

My connection here is that George Thomas Meek & Hannah Barnard also had a daughter Amelia 1874 who married my relative Charles Brain 1875. I tend to follow the siblings and parents of spouses but sometimes get carried away !!

My grandmother was Gertrude Hale - daughter of Tabitha and Amos Hale. I have picked Tabitha up in census with her listed as daughter of James and Ann Barnard. Tabitha was born 1850 and parish records list James and Ann married in 1852. I found a birth record for Tabitha Morgan, which I beieve is my greatgrandmother-Ann's maiden name was Morgan. Does anyone have documentation on this Tabitha's birth in 1850?
