Thanks Slowhand,

I suspected that he was illegitimate but thought he may have been raised as Dawe then found out that he was illegitimate on the death of his father. I wonder what event occured to make him decide to switch to his fathers name at that time? Perhaps after all that time he accepted him as his son?

It looks like Joseph has taken his mothers maiden name - usually a sign that he was born out of wedlock - which is how the records appear. Then later he"takes" her married name of CARPENTER.

Why did Joseph DAWE change his surname to CARPENTER

In the 1901 census a nephew of my great great grandmother, Rhoda Bearder, nee Greenhough was shown as staying with her and her husband William. The name of that nephew was Adolphus H Carpenter. I had traced through a number of her
Greenhough relations, but had not come across any Carpenters. I searched the BMD's and couldn't find a birth for him.

I did a search for all Adolphus' in the year around his birth and came across an Adolphus Henry Dawe. That struck a chord as I had found a marriage for her sister Elizabeth to a Joseph Dawe so I started tracing through the family and
this is what I found.

On 4th May 1873, Joseph Dawe married Elizabeth Greenhough at Drybrook

In the 1881 Census the Family name was shown in the census as Dawe

On the record of the marriage of Joseph to Elizabeth in 1873, the Grooms father appears as Hannah Carpenter.
On the record of the marriage of Joseph to Mary Ann in 1887, the Grooms father appears as Hannah Dawe.

Although Adolphus isn't shown on any of the above and there is some movement on the birth dates, there don't appear to be any other matching Joseph Dawes / Carpenters to be mixed up with and I am happy that these are the records for his father and siblings.

After all the above, my question is does anyone know why Joseph changed his name from Dawe to Carpenter?
