PRICE/CHILDS or CHILES/POWELL/SMITH (reply)

Hi Thanks again Jeff

I'm sure I've found the correct Annie Mary Burial as she did remarry and she is buried with her 2nd husband. I know a fair bit about her ancestors. Its really the burials on Davids side that are missing. I'm fairly sure the Hawkins family were Baptists.

Thank you for those links, I'm going to try and go further up David's tree so I'll have a look through it all. It seems there are lots of Hawkins in the FOD!

PRICE/CHILDS or CHILES/POWELL/SMITH (reply)

Hi Bantamweight,
you're very welcome, just wish I could have offered more help.
Re Fred's WW1 Records, do you have access to Ancestry etc, maybe at your local library if not from home, unlike some they weren't hard to find. If you haven't (or maybe you're abroad etc), then I can download them and email them to you off the forum, just send me a personal mail via the blue envelope icon. That said, despite them being available (a great many are not) they're not the easiest to read in places, but still of interest of course.
I was particularly surprised as to why he joined-up in Great Yarmouth, seems a long way from home or a likely place of work, perhaps this is a clue to further records in that area ??.
From your reply I guess you've used the 1939 Registry, I've never used that but it's clearly worthwhile in this instance.
I must say I'm puzzled we cannot find a Burial Record for Fred. The most obvious place is with wife Jessie at Christchurch, yet no PR in this site's database despite it being within the cut-off date ?. Have you visited her grave at all to search for clues ?.
That said, I see this site’s database also doesn’t include a Burial for Annie Mary Hawkins (as in David’s wife ?), despite your saying she is at Christchurch, confusing… ?

I hope you’re not getting confused with this Record, which relates to Christchurch in Hampshire, not Glos.

Re Annie Mary Hawkins nee Williams, who I presume was born in Pontypridd district c1900 judging by her marrying David there in 1921. However from my viewpoint I cannot trace her farther, as there are several possible ladies of this name in the area then, and I don’t have access to the 1939 Registry which would probably be very helpful. FreeBMD shows a few Hawkins/Williams births in the District between 1921 ans David's death in 1925, but these are all quite common names in the area so ??. I suspect Annie might well have married again after being widowed so young.

????

Unsure why but I now realise I didn't even search for Fred on FreeBMD, as I'm sure you have, so for completeness here he is, which again suggests a local Burial;

On the subject of Burial Records, after some months offline I'm pleased to see the FoD Council website is back online and allowing easy access to it's records for Mile End and Yew Tree Brake Cemetries. Sadly I cannot find Fred, but you may find other relatives there.

Regarding burials at Christchurch nr Coleford, did you know this site has a database of Monumental Inscriptions which includes Christchurch, it includes several Hawkins altho I cannot see Fred d1962 or wife Jessie, perhaps it does include other family members ?.

HAWKINS burials, Williamstown Glamorgan or F.o.Dean ? (reply)

Hi Jeff

Thank you very much for this, apologies for my slow reply I have only just found it.

Yes much of it I know, I didn't know all of Fred's war records, That Chapel sounds like a possibility I will look into that next. I know that William Harold Hawkins was on his own at 43 Edmondstown Road, Williamstown in 1939. I'm sure this is the correct William Harold because its the address given on David's Marriage cert. Further down the street from number 65. Its also the address mentioned in Martha's will.

Fred was living in Crow Ash Road, Berry Hill in 1939. I have family there now who remember that he lived there. He was living with Jessie and her siblings.

I would be delighted to find the burials of any of this Family. I Know Annie Mary is at Christchurch. I suspect most are back in Williamstown and Fred should be in the Forest somewhere.

Thank you very much for the effort you have put in, its lovely to see all that written in one place.

This FoD site does not have Fred's Burial Record.

According to Frederick's war records, it appears his brother William didn't join the Services but remained at home to work in the colliery. However his name is very common in the Pontypridd area so I cannot yet trace his future records.

PRICE/CHILDS or CHILES/POWELL/SMITH (reply)

Thank you Mike, It's all coming together now. Poor Martha, she had some bad luck in later life as well. I'm very pleased to have found her family at last.

Now if only I could find her burial. I think she probably attended a Baptist Chapel near her home in Williamstown, Rhondda and I think her husband and son were also buried somewhere where records no longer exist. At least I know where she came from now :)

PRICE/CHILDS or CHILES/POWELL/SMITH (reply)

Sorry I realise this is a very old thread. I have come across this message when searching for my Great Great Grandmother who was born Martha PRICE abt 1867. She married John HAWKINS at Parkend Baptist Chapel in 1890. (Witnesses Mary Ann KING and James HAWKINS)

I noticed on the census for the CHILES or CHILDS family mentioned here that there was a Martha PRICE aged 5 in the house of her Grandparents and next door to her possible Parents. Her Father was a George PRICE (Haulier) according to the marriage certificate. I can't find a census with Martha living with her parents and possible siblings to be sure that I've got them right. Martha seems to be missing, maybe she was just next door for the night?

I know that my Martha Price lived in West Dean and moved with John Hawkins and their 3 boys to Pontypridd. The survivors returned to Berry Hill many years later.

Its Martha's early years, birth, baptism and mothers name I need help with please.

Where is Nelson Green (reply)

Hi Andrew

Have recently discovered that my paternal grandparents lived at Nelson Green, from approx. 192? to c1944. There names were Albert Edward Davies and his wife Mary Jane (nee Price) (of Cannop).
Prior to Nelson Green they were at High Beech (Nr. Joys Green, Lydbrook) to c1926?, then at Waterloo Mill, Lydbrook until c1949, when they moved to Berry Hill.
Albert & Mary had 9 children of which my father was 2nd youngest (Cyril Thomas)born High Beech in 1921, the only sibling to survive is George Henry (born High Beech 1926)

Any info on either address / family movements / dates would be much appreciated.

I did visit the site of Waterloo Mill the other day, but it was flattened some years ago, so their was very little to see, I have yet to visit Nelson Green but I understand their may be a few walls showing, so am hoping to pay a visit before too long.
I'm new to this site, only signed up today, so am looking forward to all "that's happened" in the good old Forest.

Kind regards, Colin Davies
