I too have found your site by accident like BSeddon - who happens to be my cousin. Not realising that we were both researching our history we are going to meet up to swap information! My mother Beatrice was George and Abiah's Great grandaughter and when she was 90 we had a family party for as many aged relatives as we could muster. One lady had been married to a son of Eliza Abia Beach and filled us in with names of his relatives and this included the names James Leadbetter and Jemima Morgan so I can confirm that link. She also confirmed that George moved to Wigan (Ince-in Makerfield) seeking work in the Lancashire coalfields. Having seen the family tree at the party my own daughter later decided to perpetuate the name and so my granddaughter now aged 9 has the middle name of Abia. In fact the name has been used in a few generations ie her daughter, Eliza Abia, then her great grand-daughter used a corrupted form, Bya (Atherton) and now her Great Great Great Great Grandaughter is using it in its original form. (I had in fact got George Beach's wife down as the first Eliza Abia but your records seem to suggest that she was just Abia). I hope you have found this information interesting.

BEACH/ledbater (reply)

Hi again mp and slowhands

Since stumbling across this site last month I've become somewhat addicted!!!
I've found it both fascinating and frustrating in equal measure and have grown to appreciate the time and effort that you guys must put in.

I'm new to ancestry searches and so I've been trying to develop some tree forming skills taking, as an example, the Leadbeater family through the 1800's.

To recap why, my great grandmother Eliza Abia Seddon was born in Ince near Wigan and you kindly provided the links back to Abia Leadbeater and George Beach who moved North from the Forest of Dean in the 1860's.
Further, you have stated that Abia's parents were James Leadbeater and Jemima Morgan.

I haven't found any direct link from Abia to James and Jemima. However, 2 other independent(?)sources on the forum also make this claim.
On what basis I don't know, but it's unlikely to be baseless. For me, there's ample circumstacial evidence. So, I'll take this on trust. Unless you have access to some records that I don't know about??

Moving on.........

I've been trying to establish the relationship between the various Leadbeater family groups recorded as "breeding" during the early 1800's namely

James Leighbeter and Sarah Hick married 1793

James Ledbeter and Jemima Morgan married 1810
John Leadbeater and Margaret Gough married 1822
William Leadbeater and Jane Jackson married 1836

On the baptism side I have located the following children (and churches). The parents were "James and Sarah" in all cases.

1790 James Leighbeter Newnham
1793 John Leighbeter Littledean
1797 Mary Leighbeter Littledean
1801 Thomas Leighbeter Littledean
1802 Ann Ledbetter Littledean
1807 Sarah Leadbetter Flaxley
1809 WilliamLedbetter Littledean

I've no idea how complete the parish records would have been around this time, nor how populated these parishes were. Perhaps you could throw some light on this?

One interpretation is that these are all the children of James and Sarah Leighbeter
ie James is the patriarch of the whole Leadbeater Clan in the Forest early on

and that

James Leighbeter married Jemima Morgan
John Leighbeter married Margaret Gough
William Ledbetter married Jane Jackson

This would make James and Sarah my GGGG Grandparents! Do you think that this is likely or just my naive wishful thinking? I'd welcome any thoughts that you may have....

In short yes. I believe that this relates to Eliza and not Abia. I can't link Abia back to these parents. However, there is an illegible Baptism dated 3/8/1817 which could conceivably be Abia. Unfortunatly her marriage record does not quote parentage. Also, if the 1821 baptism was correct she would have only been 14 at her marriage.... Again this makes the 1817 baptism more likely provided that there is a link to James and Jemima elsewhere

thanks very much for your cooperation with this querry, Brian

Hi again m p

I have spent some time on the site trying to recreate the data that you so kindly provided. I believe that I have come across an anomaly relating to the parentage of Abia Ledbater who married George Beach in 1835. I would like to discuss this with someone. Would it be appropriate to raise it with yourself?

Eliza Abia SEDDON nee BEACH 1857 FoD -> Wigan LANCS (reply)

Hi Slowhands,

I came across your webpage quite by accident following a link on a 123people page belonging to a Martha Atherton who appears to live in Calafornia!!! It started with a unlikely google search for Eliza Abia Seddon who was my great grandmother. Are you also related to her in someway? Her 3rd child George was my grandfather and I remember him well. Quite how his father James and Eliza got together is a bit of a mystery given the distances (Ince and Gloucester) involved. Any info you have that would point me towards her ancestry would be appreciated. If you have any interest in her her descendents I would be happy to oblige

Regards Brian

Ps For the record, her second child Martha appears to have married one Thomas Atherton which may have given rise to the eventual Calafornian connection...
