Hawkwell Row - Hawkwell Terrace, old photo (reply)

The excellent Wild Swan old railways book "The Forest of Dean Branch Volume 2", by Ian Pope of Lightmoor site fame, carries many old photos & history of the Hawkwell mine and various brickworks, it details how the Hawkwell Brickworks was rebuilt as the Coleford Brick & Tile Co in 1936, a 1960s photo shows it's perhaps 1/2 mile from the Northern United spoil tip.
It also contains a superb old photo of Hawkwell Row, a terrace of 16 houses built by Joseph Chivers for his mine workforce, as per Slowhand's excellent link the Row is still there at the base of Ruardean Hill overlooking the A4136 road near the Steam Mills/Cinderford junction, about a mile north-east of Brierley village.

Google Maps with Streetview (finding an address) (reply)

If you want to look down Huntley Street where James BUXTON was living (or ancestors in the FOD)

use this site

www.maps.google.com/help/maps/streetview/

Cars have been sent all over the UK (and parts of the rest of the world) - photographing streets. You click on the man in the top left corner and drag him to the street. Double click on the line in the middle of the row (arrows pointing in both directions) good fun.

Alice GUNTER 1862 Lydbrook / English Bicknor (reply)

Hi, thanks for that. Alice worked at an Inn in Upper Lydbrook (in 1881) and so had made her way up to London to be a witness at Mary and James Buxton's wedding. This was on 30 January 1884 and their first son arrived on 24 October 1884 just under 9 months later! James Buxton being a soldier in 1884 probably explains why I can't find him in the 1881 census (or for that matter in 1871).
Mary died in 1949 at Stowfield Cottages, Lydbrook; can anyone identify this building? We have some photos of Mary outside the cottage so I must organise them to go onto the website.

I doubt Lydbrook could be considered as Welsh....

James BUXTON DER living Lydbrook (reply)

Just checking, but have you gone through all James Buxton marriages from 1870 (when he reached 18) until 1884 (when his first son was born)? There are over 40 and I wonder why he went all the way to London with a Welsh girl to get married in Marylebone!

James BUXTON DER living Lydbrook (reply)

Many thanks. With James' death in 1924, I think that was the end of the Buxtons in Lydbrook. Mary Hannah had moved to Birmingham and the rest were in Willesden. Only Albert Edward Buxton returned in later life. His address (3 Hawkwell Terrace, Drybrook), doesn't seem to exist any longer (on Google maps).

Buxton Family of Lydbrook

Does anyone have information on this family? James Buxton and his wife Mary Jones lived in Lydbrook in the 1880’s. They had four children William, Charlie, Charlotte and Mary Hannah. By 1901, the family had moved to Willesden in London except for James who stayed in Lydbrook where he worked as a coal hewer (collier). By 1911, William Buxton had married Violet Ethel Isabel Groves and they one child George William, and then another son Albert Edward in 1911. I have a record of Mary Buxton going back to Lydbrook for the inquest on her son Charlie, who had been disabled since birth and died in April 1911. Mary Hannah lived in Colford and we have no other information except that Albert Edward Buxton having divorced his wife, Alice Gravestock when living in London, moved back to Drybrook where he died in 1996.
