Harriet DALLY (Freereg & Wills of Herefordshire) (reply)

Thank you, M.P. I have found most of this info but it is always interesting to see it written up by someone else, with the extra comments.
On paper, it looks very promising that the James & Mary of Broadlays who baptised Harriet in 1815 are the same couple who baptised the children we know to be in our family - but I think I have to be wary.
The story of Joseph Skinner & Harriet Dally intrigued me - I thought Joseph might already have been married but so far haven't found anything definite. The Skinner name seems to be well known in Ledbury - wonder if Joseph was connected?
I must check out that will reference to Thomas Dally that you listed - always glad to have another area to check.

Regards...Judy

Broadlay nr Colwall HEREF (reply)

That's pretty detailed information, Slowhands. Thanks very much. I had checked out the maps & Geograph but it was interesting to revisit with new place names.
Now I have to wait & see if anyone can tell me about James & Mary - long shot, I know, but maybe someone is researching the family.

Broadlay nr Colwall HEREF (reply)

Where exactly is Broadlays?

Following the 1841 census "route" it appears to be close to Brockbury Hall ( Farm)

in 1851 census "route" Barton Court, Upper Mill and The Green are mentioned either side of Broadley.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1072291

I place it in the triangle between Colwall, Mill Lane to Colwall Green and Barton Court, probably as exact as I can be without a Tithe map for the period.

http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm?mapAction=gaz&gazName=g&...

Old maps
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
co ords 374600 241900

and of course this was a time before the Ledbury - Malvern railway line was laid down.

Barton Court to Colwall Green is on the turnpike road from Chances Pitch to the Wyches ( on the Malvern Hills)

James & Mary DALLY, connection between Broadlays & Ledbury (reply)

I tend to agree that Broadlays or Broadlay is near Colwall - maybe it's the name of a farm, if not an area. I think that's pretty close to Ledbury & I suppose it's possible that my family moved closer to Colwall. Of course Maria & Harriet could have been born to a completely different James & Mary.

James & Mary DALLY, connection between Broadlays & Ledbury (reply)

If you 'Google'

The Parish Church - Colwall, Herefordshire, - there are about 10 baptisms from around 1820/1829 address being given as Broadlay

including a Lucy Stanley, baptised 2 April 1829

Page 3 - 1841 Census, Colwall, Ledbury, Herefordshire - Gates End

Richard STANLEY - age 41
Charlotte STANLEY - age 35
Lucy STANLEY - age 11 etc.

On page 2 of this census, (Colwall District 17 - page 2) there are two houses with occupants - address BROADLAY.. so Richard STANLEY and family are just a few houses away from Broadlay.

District 17 - 'all that part of the Parish of Colwall, which lies to the western side of the Turnpike road leading from Chancespitch? to the Wyche'

James & Mary DALLY, connection between Broadlays & Ledbury

The FoD records show James & Mary Dally (she was most likely Buffin) baptised several children between 1803 & 1812 at the Ledbury Parish Church, including my ancestor Thomas. No other residence is given.
Using the Advanced Search feature, I also found a James & Mary Dally of Broadlays baptised Maria & Harriet in 1814 & 1815 at the Ledbury Parish Church. I haven't found Broadlays on any map, though I did find Bradlow is close to Ledbury & there is another place called The Leys nearby.

I would like to know two things:
1. Where exactly is Broadlays?
2. Are the Broadlays Dally couple likely to be the same couple as the earlier couple?
