Once again slowhands many thanks Sarah Jones really looks promising I found the minister who married them in the Brotton Census 1871 and went through the whole 64 pages no Giles, No Sarah and also no Daniel and Sarah Hill who witnessed the marriage but you have given me a new line to take so hopefully this will lead somewhere

Hi slowhands
I got the same idea with Giles Nicholls Did he change his name ? He did marry Sarah Jones daughter of Edward Jones a looks like tinman ? I wish the people writing out certs would print as I have a couple where the writing is really hard to read. Marriage cert says Joseph was a labourer so that could mean anything. I also got Giles will which wasn't much help just saying he was born in Wales. Sarah died on the trip out to New Zealand of typhoid and Giles remarried to Clara Amelia Lovewell my gg grandmother. I just seem to always hit a brick wall with Giles oh well back to the drawing board. Many thanks for your help

Even with the Marfell connection, where I have a lot of detail you usually manage to add to my knowledge, in this instance you have given me 3 census entries I didn't have before, plus the deaths of Pybus & Leah.

I would guess that Leah Marfell was in service in West Ham and as Pybus was an engine driver she met him in London. A lot of relationships were made this way, Leah's sister Elizabeth Marfell born Ruardean, married a Joseph Cade Mannell, a Cornish Carpenter, Builder & Decorator. They married in Campden Hill. Also whilst both Elizabeth & Joseph died in Ladbroke Grove & Kensington London, they are both buried in Ruardean.

My own Grandfather contracted scillicosis as a Forest of Dean Coal Miner, the whole family moved to Croydon, where my Aunt was in service and she said "it was a nice place". My mother met my father, a Regular Soldier in the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery, based at Woolwich and as a result I was born in Croydon 9 months after my father got back from the war.

None of this however has helped the original poster searching for Giles Nicholson.

I have no other information other than when he married in Brotton Yorkshire he was a coal miner
