Robert Forester and David Mushet (reply)

It would appear that “tunnicliffe’ is no longer registered on the site however the Marriage Register entry is available on Ancestry. Mary Ann’s father is given as John and his occupation is Farmer but his mother’s name is not given and it would appear that none of the witnesses, George Lewis and Frances Chapman, are from the Thomas family.
With the exception the 1851 Census Mary Ann’s birthplace is given as St Briavels and searching the Parish Records we find this Baptism:

Year: 1818
Month: Aug
Day: 23
Parents_Surname: THOMAS
Child_Forenames: Mary
Fathers_Forenames: John
Mothers_Forenames: Catherina
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Hudnalls
Occupation: Labourer
Officiating_Minister: Geo. Ridout
Event: Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P278 IN 1/5
Page_Number: 17
Parish_Chapel: St Briavels

This leads us to the 1851 Census entry for the THOMAS family:
1851 Census
House Number Given Name Surname Relationship Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth Place
80 John Thomas Head 79 1772 Male Woolaston, Gloucestershire, England
80 Catharine Thomas Wife 63 1788 Female Trellegg, Monmouthshire, Wales
80 William Thomas Son 28 1823 Male St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England
80 John Thomas Son 26 1825 Male St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England
80 George Thomas Son 19 1832 Male St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England
80 Decima Thomas Daughter 15 1836 Female St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England

This Census entry gives John’s occupation as Farmer and you will see from the entry that Catharine is from Trellech, Monmouthshire which is only a short distance from St Briavels. Searching for a marriage for John Thomas we find:

Hello,
About 6 years ago you replied to my inquiry about David and Robert Mushet. You mentioned that you have Robert F and Mary Ann's marriage cert. IS there anyway you can scan that in or send me a copy? Does it have a mother for Mary Ann? I am direct descendant of Robert Forester.

Robert Forester and David Mushet (reply)

I think Robert Forester Mushet was married to Mary Ann Thomas, born St. Briavels - it is possible that Mary Ann had a sister Catherine Lizzie Thomas, who married Daniel Croome 1789/1881. I have the marriage cert. for Robert F.Mushet and Mary Ann Thomas dated 1841, at Cheltenham. This give Mary Ann's father as John Thomas of St. Briavels.

It would be great if I was ringing any bells.

Brenda Croome.

The Story of the Mushets by Fred Osborn (1952) (reply)

A book was published in 1952 by Fred Osborn. Fred Osborn being a direct descendant of Samuel Osborn. Samuel Osborn joined forces with the Mushets in broadening the scope of his steel works in Sheffield, taking advantage of the specialised type of steel which Mushet invented. The firm, at one stage, became known as Osborn Mushet. The business relationship between the two is significant in the history of Sheffield's steel industry for which the city was once famous. Part of this business relationship led to six of the best of Mushet's workers to be transferred from the Forest of Dean to Samuel Osborn's company in Sheffield. I am directly descended from one of the 6 people (Thomas Rook). This meant them relocating from Gloucestershire to Yorkshire in the 1870s.
The book is worth finding, there is a copy that is deposited in Sheffield City Archives which cannot be borrowed or removed from their Samuel Osborn/Osborn Mushet collection but there may well be more copies around though it is probably out of print. They would not allow me to photocopy any of it even for study purposes when I asked but might be able to give you some idea of its content. Sheffield Archive will have its ISBN number but I will look to see if I have it anywhere.
Samuel Osborn's steel works operated from the same building until very recently, but it has only recently closed down. You might also be interested that in Sheffield there is also a Coleford Road. By mistake once I said on this website that it is near Samuel Osborn's but in fact it is in another part of Sheffield which was the heart of the steel industry.

Robert Forester and David Mushet

I am a direct decendant of David and Robert Forester Mushet. Robert Forester had a son Edward Maxwell Tom Mushet who was my great great grandfather. His son Edward Robert Mushet is my great grandfather. His son Robert Frank Prescott Mushet was my grand father who lived in Los Angeles California and was a photographer. My father spent a lot of time with him taking pictures all around. My father is Robert Arthur Tyler Mushet and my name is Russell Mushet. Anyway, I was reading online on wikipedia and found a lot of things written about David and we have done a fair bit of research and we could never find anything about him. It was really exciting to see his tombstone picture with his wife Agnes. I was hoping to get in contact with Ralph Anstis but I found out he passed away. I was wondering where I can get the resources that Ralph Anstis had. I am also curious what sources are available about William Mushet being his father. Who is the best person to contact about this? I am really interested about sources for David and his father.
