Many thanks Slowhands. I thought that the Harry Stokes who died in 1917 was the best fit. I think I will have to send for the certificates to see if they give any clues. It is all very strange.
There is something odd in the daughter and son-in-law going to Durham with their mother as I can't imagine that the job situation was any easier in Stanley than Bristol. In addition, all those adults and children seem to have been crammed into a tiny terrace house.

Thank you for your responses. I thought that Jane may have worked as a domestic in Bristol but I have been unable to identify Harry Stokes' death.I wondered if anyone knew what had happened. Jane's marriage to William Morgan is registered.

I'm not sure I've understood your question... If your query is how it came about that Jane Morgan married Harry Stokes at Clifton. Then I would imagine that Jane was working as a domestic in Bristol and she met Harry while working there.

There was little or no work for young girls in the mining communiies, so when they left school at fourteen, many went away from the Forest to work in domestic service in the more affluent districts of London, Bristol, Cheltenham and other cities.

I have just discovered that Jane Hannah Morgan (b1856 the child of John and Hester Morgan) who married Harry Stokes in 1875 in Clifton went on to marry her sister's, my great great grandmother(born Eliza Ann Morgan died 1897),
husband William Morgan (b1847 Lydbrook d1924 Stanley Durham) in 1899.

I would be very grateful if anyone could shed some light on the circumstances.
