Frank Edward EAGLES 1890 -1985 Littledean -> Florida (reply)

It shows the worth of posting on this forum. Back in 2010 I appealed for information about Frank Edward Eagles - son of Henry Thomas Eagles and Fanny Eagles (nee Shearman). Frank was a younger brother of my paternal grandmother - Edith Emily Eagles. He vanished from my grandmothers house in Surrey around 1920 and was never heard of again. 'Slow Hands' found a divorce case in which Frank was a co-repsondent but the trail eventually went cold.

Recently I acted on a chance finding of an American death in Florida and found that Frank had died in Broward County, Florida in 1985. The death certificate was brilliant as it gave the full names of his parents and that of his widow. That led me to find their marriage and that they had tied the knot in 1970, when Frank was 80! I have since found that a month prior to his marriage he had divorced his previous wife.

Anyone researching the descendants of Henry Thomas Eagles and Fanny Eagles (nee Shearman) are more than welcome to contact me. To date I have traced over 250 blood descendants of theirs in many parts of the UK, a number of areas in the USA and Australia.

Police House, Church St, Littledean in 1891? (reply)

Hi Paul,
it's tricky as the Jail, as I'm sure you know from maps etc, is on Church Street but so is most of the old part of Littledean !. Just in case you haven't seen these sites, the Littledean Jail website states that
"Police Sergeant Samuel Beard stationed here at Littledean Jail was the first policeman in the County to be killed in the line of duty at Speech House Hotel in the Forest of Dean in 1861."
http://www.littledeanjail.com/page19.asp

While GB's Haunted WestCountry site states
"In 1854 Littledean jail was no longer used as a house of correction, used instead as a police station, remand prison and petty sessional Court from 1874. It was also to serve as as a headquarters for the county’s mounted police, stabling horses here inside this one time treadmill outbuilding."
http://www.gbhw.co.uk/_wp_generated/wp961ff12b.png

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of these sites, perhaps contacting the Jail direct would be worthwhile, they may have more records of Henry.
Personally I think the Beard & later the Eagles families would have lived within the Jail Building, it's certainly large enough !

These earlier threads may be of interest although I suspect you've already seen them.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=20718
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=570
I hope this helps.

Police House, Church St, Littledean in 1891? (reply)

The 1891 Census shows Henry Thomas Eagles (born 1848), a serving Gloucestershire Constabulary officer, living with his wife (Fanny Eagles nee Shearman) and children in Church Street, Littledean. Ahead of a visit I am making to Gloucestershire is anyone able to identify which house that would have been or would it have been Littledan Jail, with officers and their families living there at that time? Many thanks for taking time to read this message.

Frank Edward EAGLES 1890 Littledean -> USA (reply)

The stay in New York would have been with his future brother-in-law (James Beard). The two of them went out to USA to meet up with Arthur Eagles, who had emigrated along with another brother, to seek work. Beard was a cabinet maker and Eagles was a carpenter.

James & Frank booked to travel on Titanic but cancelled due to cabin being in line with engines. Travelled 10 days later on White Star Line ship 'Baltic'. My aunt has James's diaries from that trip.

I guess that the entry into the UK at Southampton would have been when James and Frank came back home. James Beard got married in 1917 so it would have been in the 20's / 30's (probably former) that Frank vanished.

Thanks again for the information
