This is what I have concluded about the Phelps family. Some of my conclusions I can't prove but I really think that they are right. I would gladly accept additions or corrections.Most of the dates are from this website. I have been doing research on this family for my friends who are descendants of James and Prudence through their daughter Mary who married Joel Arkwell. James and Prudence are their 4 great grandparents.

James Phelps joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints (Mormon)in 1841. The following is my reasoning for thinking that James Blewett is James Phelps.
1. On the LDS Church records it says that James Phelps was born 12 Nov 1779 in Longhope and his parents are William and Susan Phelps.
2.The only William and Susan(Susannah) in Longhope at that time are William Phelps and Susannah Blewett. They were not married until 1786 but Susannah had 4 illigitimate children at the time....one was named James but he was not christened until 1782 which is not the date James says he was born. He did have a brother William who was christened in 1779.
3. His birth date also has differences on the census records. 1851 he was born 1782 and in 1861 he was born in 1778. On the death record he would have been born in 1879 so that is inconclusive.
4.I researched the other names on the LDS Church records where his birth date was listed and I found several other discrepencies with other people...so maybe his date of birth may have been wrong also.These were just records of members which had been carried over from year to year
5. The other Blewett children all used the Phelps name when they were married and the rest of their lives so it would seem plausable that James did also.

James PHELPS and Prudence GOODE are my Greatx4 Grandparents. I see the thread of Susannah BLEWETT marrying William PHELPS in 1786 and that it is likely James BLEWETT took on the PHELPS name. I have picked up that Susannah had other children with the father "not stated" on the baptisms:

William 4/7/1779
James 8/1/1782
Elizabeth 2/3/1783
Mary 28/8/1785

Is it possible that they are William's children?

Others born after William and Susannah are married:
Sarah 28/6/1788
Susanna 8/5/1791
John 3/11/1793
Thomas 25/3/1798

William can be found on the 1841 census at the age of 90 living with his daughter
Susannah and her husband Thomas BULLOCK.

Was William PHELPS married but separated from someone else prior to 1786?

If so history repeated itself as my Gt Grandparents Thomas Walter PHELPS and Blanche LEWIS (nee ROBERTS)had their children between 1901-1915 and married in 1928 with Blanche listed as widowed.

Thanks Louise -her birth date of 1815 would fit in with her death details -Upper Lydbrook Feb 18th 1903 -aged 88years -and her place in the family order -John born 1813 then Charlotte, then Mary born 1818 ...and others.
The will was interesting -a labourer leaving a will!
Could you tell me how you are related to her. Charlotte is the great-grandmother of my grandfather Thomas Johnson whose grandparenst were James Johnson and Fanny (Annie]
Weare and parenst were Allen Johnson b.1869 and Elizabeth Burney b.1871.

Your info has been really important as it filled the missing piece of the jigsaw and I can now link Charlotte back to her parents which fortuantely I kept on my tree.

I can't find anything about her either until she gets married to James Johnson but it you go to the home page of this site and click on the wills and put in James Phelps name, then look for the people listed on his will she is listed as a daughter. I looked up the will at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and it clearly states that Charlotte Johnson is his daughter. I have calculated that she was born about 1815.

I have just come back on the forum after a break and thank you for your reply. I originally thought they were her parents but couldnot find her anywhere and they had another child of similar age. I would be really grateful for the information you have on Charlotte. I have the will of Esther Johnson if this is of use to you.

Charlotte Phelps who married James Johnson is the daughter of James Phelps and Prudence Goode. She is listed as a daughter on the will of James Phelps who died in 1869 in Abenhall.

James Phelps was christened in Longhope as James Blewett the son of Susannah Blewett who later married William Phelps.

If you are still interested in this information I will reply in more detail.

I have just looked at the Family Search,org records again -they have 'Maria' down for the birth year 1813 but no marriage for Maria in Abenhall and then the marriage for Charlotte in 1834 -so perhaps that is another reason for thinking this is the baptism.Would I have to view the actual record at the record office in Gloucester or is there a CD I could buy?

I wondered about this record -its the only one in the same year with the same place and surname -what worries me is how to transcribe -Charlotte which is a much longer name -into the short name -but then perhaps they couldn't quite read the name -.

Thanks -I have the marriage from the Forest of Dean site and the IGI index which also says she was born in Abenhall c 1813 but I just cant find a baptism and so I am stuck regarding her parents....so any help with her parents would be must appreciated. I have Ancestry but there are no leads on their parish records.

I posted a message in 2008 about Charlotte Phelps parents and from the replies ruled certain parents out -but I am no further on despite extensive searches over the years and recently as to her parentage.
She married James Johnson in Abenhall Dec 27 1834 -I have followed her in all censuses and have her death cert. Her age doesn't vary much born 1813-15 and place of birth Edge Hills or Abinghall -then Abenhall -but I can find her baptism. There is a Charlotte Dean for FEB 1813 in Abenhall but I dont think it would be the sameperson the surname is so different.
I would be grateful for any help with this!
