William WILLIAMS/Flora Jane MEEK - 1899 WS (reply)

Well that seems to fit in with other info I have. This William Williams was my great-uncle (his father and grand-father were also called William). I am sure I recall my mother talking about her cousin Myrtle which would fit too.

Earl MEEK (reply)

Jim on Ancestry:

There is an Earl MECK (which looks like MEEK) - age 22 and a Miner, (3rd Class) arriving in Liverpool, on the 17 May 1910 aboard the Maurentia, (Cunard Line) from New York to Liverpool via. Fishguard

Lots of MEEK's going backwards and forwards across the pond - and can see quite a few people with occupation: MINERS

Thanks Colin, also M P Griffiths for shipping detail.

Interesting that Florence is shown as a Williams with daughter Myrtle in 1901, I cannot find a marriage on parish records or Free BMD, perhaps she married him in USA, Myrtle does sound "American" - with apologies to any British or other nationality Myrtle's !!

Lucy/ALFRED MEEK (reply)

While checking the census entries for this family I found a gap (no 1891 record) and from the birth locations given in 1901 it would seem that the family moved to the USA around 1882 and returned sometime before 1896. Albert and Earl were born in the USA c1883 and c1888 but Ray was born in Cinderford around 1896.

1901 Census - Bilson Green
Alfred Meek 44 - head - Coal Miner/Hewer - b Drybrook
Lucy Meek 44 - wife - b Drybrook
Flora M Williams 22 - daughter - b Drybrook
Lily Meek 20 - daughter - Draper's Assistant - b Drybrook
Albert Meek 18 - son - Coal Miner/Hewer filling - b USA
Earl Meek 13 - son - b USA
Ray Meek 5 - son - b Cinderford
Myrtle Williams 8 months - grand-daughter - b Cinderford

My records suggest that Alfred was my first cousin 3 times removed and Lucy my third cousin twice removed (plus other more distant connections for both of them ! )

Anyone have any further information about where they went?

Thanks

Parish Record Check Please Lucy & Alfred Meek marriage (reply)

Thanks Graham.

Unless I hear to the contrary, I think I agree that the minister got them transposed.

Thanks too M P Griffiths

As you can imagine, I already have all the Census data and you are right Moses Meek is the son of Beriah Meek who was in turn the son of Moses Meek 1779 and Anne Brain 1781. I am related to both Moses and Anne, and to add to those relationships, it was a first marriage for Anne Brain, her second when Moses died in 1827 was to a second cousin Henry Roberts 1777.

Thanks also to Colin Fenton
As you know it was quite common for two or more children to be baptised on the same day, indeed her siblings Jane (who married Alfred Meek's brother John **), Tryphena, Moses, Rhoda & Bessie were all baptised on 16 Jan 1870.

** When Jane Meek married John Meek, the minister managed to get their parents Richard Meek & Moses Meek the right way around !! Perhaps it was easier because Richard was dead by then.

Lucy/ALFRED MEEK (reply)

I agree - census information supports Jim's original information.

There is also a baptism (Drybrook) for Lucy on 31Mar1861 on the same day as her sister, Lydia, though ages shown in the censuses show that Lucy was probably born in 1856 (Westbury on Severn 1856 Q1 6a 186) and Lydia in 1857 (Westbury on Severn 1857 Q4 6a 175).
