theophila meredith 1826 (reply)

I just thought I would try the preview button before posting a lengthy reply and trying to edit it - it vanished. So I will try again:

Slowhands Brilliant as ever.

We in the UK (USA in October) have just enjoyed a very good series on BBC1 about a modern day Sherlock Holmes. When will we get a series "Slowhands the Detective" !!

As you noted James Parsons 1823 who married Theophillia Meredith 1826 was the son of James Parsons 1794 & Mary Parker 1798. The baptism for Timothy Parsons 25 Aug 1716 was also the son of James Parsons 1794 & Mary Parker 1798. Timothy married an Ann but I cannot find more about her :

1851 Census East Dean
PARSONS Timothy 34 Engineer Ruardean
Ann 29 Ruardean
James 10 Scholar Ruardean
Eliza 8 Scholar Ruardean
Rhoda 1 Ruardean
Israel 10m Ruardean

Their daughter Rhoda Parsons 1849 married my 1st cousin 3 times removed Cornelius Brain 1848, he being the son of Simeon Brain 1819 & my GGG Aunt Ann Marfell 1824. Their son Micah Brain 1899 married Dorothy Jessie Marfell 1894.

Going back to James Parsons 1794, he was as you noted the son of Thomas Parsons 1770 & Lucy Baldwin 1771. Thomas & Lucy had 6 children including John Parsons 1797 who married Ann Herbert 1796, also George Parsons 1804 who married Margaret Herbert 1806. Ann & Margaret Herbert were not siblings. Margaret Herbert 1806 was my GGG Aunt, daughter of William Herbert 1758 and his second wife Martha Woore 1782. Ann Herbert 1796 was the daughter of John Herbert 1745 & Nancy Morgan 1745. Ann Herbert 1796 had a sister Tamar who was the second wife of Cornelius Marfell 1779. Their daughter Ann 1824 married Simeon Brain 1819 as above.

Thomas Parsons 1770 & Lucy Baldwin 1771 also had a son Ephraim 1817 who married Amelia Baldwin 1817, Amelia being the daughter of Joseph Baldwin 1780 and Sarah Smart 1786. Joseph Baldwin 1780 being the son of Thomas Baldwin 1746 & Sarah Waldin 1746. These are the parents of Lucy Baldwin 1771 who married Thomas Parsons 1770. The inevitable Marfell connection is that Thomas Baldwin 1746 & Sarah Waldin 1746 also had a son Moses 1777 who married my GGGGG Aunt Lucy Marfell 1775.

I could go on, but I think I had better stop, it just remains to thank you again Slowhands for pointing me towards the Parsons connections.

theophila meredith 1826 (reply)

Hi Steve

I have followed this thread with interest and as usual have added to my information. I had Theophillia Meredith and her spouse James Parsons in my family tree as their daughter Mary baptised 20 Jun 1847 Drybrook (one of 8 children), married Timothy Yemm born 1847 at Drybrook 7 Apr 1871. They had 2 children:
Mirrium Matilda Yemm 1869 married 27 Mar 1890 Fulton Co. IL. USA to William Crone. Second marriage to James Smart 19 Apr 1893 Fulton Co.
Susanna Yemm born 22 Dec 1871 baptised 21 Jan 1872 Drybrook. She married 1 Jan 1890 Lewiston, Fulton Co. IL. USA to John Osman Blanch born 22 Sep 1869 bapt. 17 Oct 1869 Forest of Dean Bible Christian Circuit. John Osman Blanch Son of Thomas Blanch 1834 and Mary Ann Marfell 1828 - which was where my interest started.
John Osman Blanch & Susanna nee Yemm had 3 children all born Illinois.

1880 Census 11.6.1880 Cuba, Fulton County, Illinois, USA

Yemm Timothy 31 Coal Miner
Yemm Mary 31 wife
Yemm Mirrium 11 dtr
Yemm Susanna 8 dtr
Yemm Frederick 22 Cousin Coal Miner
Marfell Albert 31 Cousin Coal Miner
Stevens John 33 Boarder Coal Miner

A number of the Coal Mining families who emigrated to the Illinois Coalfields lived together, indeed at one time Timothy Yemm lived with Moses Yemm & Simeon Yemm - 3 Yemm families in one house. Simeon Yemm eventually married a Mary Ann Yemm a second wife after the death of Edith Morgan in 1883.

I would be interested to know if anyone knows the parents of James Parsons 1825 who married Theophillia Meredith, there are a number of baptisms around this time. I have a number of Parsons in my family tree and it would be good to make a connection.
