Mary and her husband Richard Protheroe had been licencees of the Cross Keys for many years. I assume she carried on after Richard's death until her re-marriage to Robert Wilkins, as she and Robert were still there in 1881.

Hi. My maiden name is Wilkins and was very interested to read this link. I have been researching my relatives and have Mary and Robert down as my 4 times grandparents. Mary was born late 1700hundreds and married Robert, they had a son Robert (my grt, grt grandad) born 1817 in Lydiard Wiltshire who married Harriet Peters from Aylburton in 1840. It was this Robert who was the licencee of the Cross Keys pub in Lydney.
they had at least 9 children including Robert born 1856 who is my great grandad.
He married Alice Jenkins from Viney Hill in 1877 and went on to have more than 10 children. My grandad Robert William being born in 1877.
He married Minnie Hook from Whitecroftin 1899 and together had 8 children. My dad Ferdinand was born in 1915 and was the only one to have children

It would have been more straightforward if they had married in the Forest, not 50 miles away !!!

Mary PROTHERO, missing burial

I'd be grateful for help in searching for the burial of Mary Prothero. In C1871 she is aged 62 & living with her husband, Richard recorded as ROTHEROE, an innkeeper in Church Rd Lydney. Richard died Nov 1871, buried Lydney but I can find no trace of Mary in C1881 as Prothero or Rotheroe. I've checked all those children I can find and she's not with them I've also checked through the death registers where there are a couple of possibles outside the county. An address search in C1881 for Church Rd Lydney returns no results. I suppose a re-marriage is always possible.
