There is a Newspaper Article (Dean Forest Mercury - started in 1881) on Frederick ADAMS (Miner) of the RUFFIT who died in 1941 - may be Tom WOOLFORD's funeral would have been reported in the Mercury.

WOOLFORD Littledean/ Cinderford Free-miners (reply)

Thanks very much both of you for the ideas and info.

A google search turned up the Coalmining History Resource centre website which had lots of information about fatalities in mines, and can be searched by geographic area or surname.

http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/

Thanks again,
Kate

Colliery accidents to and death of WOOLFORD (reply)

There's a posting I put on here some time ago which gave a link or the website name to a useful coal mine pit disaster record source. I found it just by Googling Pit Disasters I think. It might be worth looking for it if it was in a pit disaster but if it was an accident which affected only him local newspapers of the time would be likely to have reported on it.

Colliery accidents to and death of WOOLFORD

I'm trying to find evidence of my WOOLFORD (Littledean, 1850s to 20th century) ancestors' work in the local coal mines.

Thomas WOOLFORD (b. ~1869 Littledean) died on 12.2.1916 in Gloucester Infirmary, apparently six weeks after being injured in a pit accident.

Thomas' brother William Henry WOOLFORD (b. 1873 Littledean) reportedly stopped working at Lightmoor Pit after being injured in an accident there.

I've checked the inquests, newspaper clippings and other records on this site, and also the Lightmoor pages on the FoD Local History Society website but can't find any further information.

If anyone has any pointers on where to look next I'd be very grateful!
