NICHOLSON (reply)

William Nicholson is in the Correct District District 2 i.e. Whitehall) on the 1881 census

'Part of the Civil Parish of Newland in the Tything of Coleford, comprised in High Street, Cinder Hill, Pingrey Lane, Bricknock Court, Tufthorn Lane, Milkwall, Edenwall/Upper & Lower) Coalway Lane End, Whitehall, Lord's Hill, Coalway Road and Market Place'

Looking at the Probate Records on Ancestry

William NICHOLSON - died 19 December 1881 - Probate Year 1882 (21 September)

The Will with a Codicil of William NICHOLSON late of Higher Lord's Hill, Coleford in the County of Gloucester who died 19 December 1881 at Coleford, was proved at Gloucester by Thomas NICHOLSON of Yorkley in the said County, Gentleman and Benjamin Wilmot PROVIS, Draper and Betram Herbert Taylor, Ironmonger, both of Coleford and Executors.

Personal Estate £1,270

Thomas NICHOLSON is a Widower age 75, born Coleford, Baptist Minster, on the 1881 census

As a Codicil is an alteration or a condition to a Will - wonder whether the two Wills of a William NICHOLSON in 1835 and 1836 (non-conformist) Newland on the Gloucestershire Genealogical Database - belong to William NICHOLSON, the Baptist Minister after the birth of his two children.

Hopewell in Wimberry (Thomas & William NICHOLSON) - William NICHOLSON mentioned 15 January 1846

Nicholson - 1841 census (reply)

Yes, it looks as though you could be right! So, by 1841, William is married again, to Ann, & already postmaster at Coleford. But children from first marriage to Martha, (Eliza & William), are not shown there. Sarah (sister of William the postmaster) later moves to Coleford & the children are back with their father again in 1851. In 1861 Eliza is married. Sarah stays with William & Ann (then Mary, his 3rd wife) until 1881 census.

I had the deaths of the 2 Marthas, was thinking that they may be related to childbirth. The frustrating thing was not to be able to get ages or find burial records. At that time William & his family seemed to be very active in establishing the Baptist Church in Lydney etc. And still can't find death/burial record for Ann.

Now that it seems to be adding up, will put ordering death certs for the Marthas on my list.

Many thanks for putting the pieces together
Sue

NICHOLSON William, Coleford, Newland from 1830s

Looking for info on family of William Nicholson, Baptist minister & postmaster of Coleford. It seems that he first married Martha Nicholson (cousin) in 1834. Son William (Patrick) b 1835 went to Queensland, Australia and daughter Eliza b 1837 married Edward Davies & went to NZ in 1875. Eliza was my gggmother.

William’s wife was shown as Ann, b Plymouth, in Censuses from 1851 to 1871, then wife in 1881 is Mary Clayton. Did Martha die before 1839 – that would fit a marriage to Ann Ayre of Plymouth. And was Mary the third wife?

I have a fair amount of info on the Aus & NZ families, and a transcript of Eliza’s shipboard diary (have not been able to discover who posted it on net).

Would be grateful for any info.
Sue
