Trev - I assumed you were more interested in the Lucas family rather than the Hopkins mob, so I haven't replied before now.

Just to let you know that John Hopkins was a brother to my great grandfather William Hopkins. William was one of five children of that family who emigrated to New Zealand. He arrived here in 1860. There were 5 "stay-at-home" Hopkins siblings from that family that as far as I know stayed in Britain, of whom John seems to be one.

This is what I know about the ones who came here and the ones that stayed:

Migration of Thomas and Sarah Hopkins' children (in order of age):
Janetta b: 1826 Lydney, Glos (married name Worgan at time of migration)
William b: 1834 Lydney, Glos
Emma b: 1836 Lydney, Glos (married name Fletcher at time of migration)
Sarah b: 1844 Lydney, Glos
Alfred b: 1846 Lydney, Glos.

The following siblings stayed behind in the FoD (so far as I know!)
Elizabeth b: 1832 Lydney, Glos
Thomas b: 1837 Lydney, Glos
John b: 1839 Lydney, Glos
Henry b: 1841 Lydney, Glos
Philip b: 1842 Lydney, Glos.

Let me know if you want any other information about the Hopkins side.

Jesse LUCAS 1849 -1909 (reply)

Hi

I can give you some more accurate info on Jesse and family.

Louisa Darby was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Darby who married Jesse.

Jesse D.O.B 9.12.1846

Beatrice Lucas D.O.B. 14.1.1884

Thomas Henry Lucas D.O.B 1.6.1886

Jesse/Elizabeth also had another daughter Sarah D.O.B 14.7.1894

Mary Lucas D.O.B June quarter 1889. She was sent off to live with her aunty Anne (Jesse's sister) in Bristol

Both Beatrice and my grandfather Thomas often spoke of their visits to the Forest on holiday though it was more likely to see the Darby side than the Lucas. After Jesse died a couple of his children went to live with Ambrose and Treasure Darby who also lived in Tredegar though were both born on the Forest.

Emanuel LUCAS 1803 Aylburton nr Lydney ( and son Jesse) (reply)

Hi

Although you posted a year ago I have just noticed your item about Emmanuel Lucas.

My greatgrandfather was one of his sons, Jesse. He apparently was a bit of a handful so was given a sum of money to clear off and he managed to spend the lot by the time he got to Newport ( then Monmouthshire). He made his way to Tredegar where I'm sure he new he had family ( Darby side) and married his cousin Elizabeth (daughter of Sam and Sarah Darby). He worked in the local coalmine and suffered an accident underground which ended his working life. He was looked after by my grandfather, Tom Lucas until Jesse died (his wife Elizabeth had died afew years previously).

If more information is required then let me know.

Emmanual Lucas is my Great Great Grandfather. He was born in 1803 & married Sarah. They had 7 children of which Reuben (born 1841) was the 3rd eldest. His younger sister was Keziah. My paternal Grandfather Osborne James Lucas (1912)was born in Bream, Newland, the youngest of 6. He moved to Birmingham and married raising 12 children. I've traced the family back to Emmanual(born 1803) but would appreciate any other leads or information.
