Ann JAMES 1789 - 1864 Penalt MON (reply)

I know houses change names, but as a resident and former postman in Monmouth I have never come across a Primrose Hill, it sounds like a location rather than an address? My great-grandmother is buried in Monmouth (Wyesham/Dixton)but she died in Ludlow, so she was brought back to where her family were from, but her death is registered in Ludlow Maybe Primrose Hill was somewhere else, the only place I know is Lydney. Also there is another Dixton in Herefordshire, it's out towards Hay from Hereford,it's part of some other parish. Dixton Monmouth is a Herefordshire parish and the parish extends down to Redbrook and Penalt church and parish is clearly visable just across the river. Also another member of my family lived and died on Penalt but is buried at Wyesham, so someone from Penalt being buried at Dixton is nothing unusual. Is any of that of help to anyone? ahh well Merry Christmas

Surname: JAMES
Forenames: Ann

Thanks for the extra background

I'm not aware of a Primrose Hill in the Dixton area, unless the Dixton "parish" comes across the river and takes in parts of Penalt, to include Primrose Bank, Lone Lane

Ann JAMES 1789 - 1864 Penalt MON (reply)

I looked in the BMD and there is an Ann JONES registered in Monmouth in Mar qtr 1864, so maybe that's her....I'll send away for it and see.
In 1839 when her husband, John died, his will leaves the house etc to Ann and land packages to the 4 daughters. I think it was written before the son was born. Anyway, by the 1841 census, all the land seems to have been sold off and on one census she is listed as "Charwoman" so they must have fallen on hard times. All around that area today belongs to the Gwent wildlife group. I know they lived at Lone Lane because that's where John died....maybe one of the girls lived at Primrose Hill Dixton....it doesn't look that far away on the map?

Registration district for Dixton (reply)

It only just occured to me when you mentioned the daughter registering the death. While the parish record might list where she generally lived, and where she was buried, it might not have mentioned where she died. Do you know where her daughters were living at the time? Might she have gone to stay with one of them during the end of her life? If so, her death might have been registered in the daughters' district even if she were buried in her own parish . . .

Just thinking out loud here, but it might be worth a look.

Registration district for Dixton (reply)

Thanks for the replies.Ann registered her husband's death in 1839, and they had 4 daughters, so I can't understand why one of them wouldn't have registered it. However, I will look for Jones on BMD's now.

Thanks again

Registration district for Dixton (reply)

I'm guessing that Slowhands is right, as usual, in this instance but I've discovered misspellings can play a role in missing ancestors as well. The last name "James" in my line has been recorded as "Jones" in more than one place, and my great Aunt, whose name was Bessie or Elizabeth on other documents shows up as "Lessia" in a couple of places. Her son, William is listed as "Cam" because that is what "Wm" looked like to the trancriptionist.

So try to be as non specific as you can be in your text search. Also try looking in the wills or probate index. You might be more successful there.

Happy hunting.

Registration district for Dixton

I found an ancestor, Ann JAMES in the Parish Records, burial 26 Jan 1864 aged 76 at Primrose Hill Dixton. I'm sure this will be her. However, when I go to BMD to get the GRO reference to order a certificate, there's no Ann James registered in Monmouth for the last qtr of 1863 or 1st qtr of 1864.
Could anyone please help me sort this one out?
