I believe I've found Nell in 1911! She's a housemaid working for Mary Anne Musket at 10 Sydenham Villas in Cheltenham. At Find My Past, she's indexed as "Enslly"...It looks more like "Fnelly" on the census image. She's born in Cinderford (Find My Past says "Anderford"). Reg. Dist. and Sub. Dist. Cheltenham, Enumeration Dist. 17, RG 14. Try using Mary Anne Musket, born 1818 plus or minus 1 year...maybe that will be easier!

Yes, Feb 9 1848 is the correct Mary. I am going to try for her now on the Census.
This still leaves Nell, my grandmother, born in May 1894 which would make her 16 at the time of the census. I know she was in service somewhere in Cheltenham at some point prior to the family moving to Crosskeys in Monmouthshire (where other children had already gone for work) but using any of her names has not brought up anything.

I just tried the official 1911 census.co.uk site and Mary only comes up without using her place of birth. So, put in Mary, Mill, birth year 1848 exact, residence Gloucestershire and you'll get her...she also comes up without Mill, I think!

At Find My Past, the address is listed as "Steam Mills near Conderford" (should be Cinderford) and Reg. Dist. is Westbury on Severn, Schedule No. 101, Sub. Dist. East Dean, RG14, piece 15229, Enumeration Dist. 7. I found Mary by not putting in a last name....just Mary..exact, year of birth 1848..exact, born Gloucestershire, living at Gloucestershire. Quite a few Marys came up, including yours. I had seen her possible christening for February 9, 1848....Mary Lloyd...is that your Mary? The last name Hill also looks a little like "Abell"...maybe try that?

I have been trying to find this census for Mary and James Hill. I am with ancestry.co.uk and i have looked at the census books there but even though I have looked in Westbury on severn I haven't found the area as I am castying around in the dark. I tried on the official census site too, where i have a membership and buy xcredits but neither Mary Hill nor Mill is coming up. Could you give me the reference to allow me to find the census? ie district and street etc? Many thanks and a good New Year!

When you look closely at the image of the census record for Mary Hill, you can see that some information was erased. She reported that she has had 12 total children born alive, 10 children still living and 2 who have died. I suppose it would have been erased because the info was for a current marriage and she no longer had a husband.

This morning, I found Mary and her son, James, in the 1911 census. They're at Steam Mills near Cinderford! The H of Hill looks like an M ..... so they're listed under "Mill" not "Hill". Mary is a widow, age 62, and James is 23 and is a coal ?? filler. Both are shown as being born at Littledean, Glos.
Now, where is Irene Ellen?

I have also found that Mary Ann Hill. It is not the right woman. I have the birth and marriage certs for her and she was only Mary (a twin with a brother Joseph!) She had about 12 children altogether so this one does not fit. I am wondering whether the family was actually split up at this time and only got back together when they moved to Wales.
I have downloaded both Census returns from 1911 and attached them to my people. These seem spot on.

Was Mary Hill senior also known as Mary Ann? There is a Mary Ann Hill, housekeeper, age 65, widow, at the home of Francis Jordon at Church Lane, Mitchelldean, Westbury on Severn in 1911. Her birthplace is "not known". She has had 6 children and 3 survived to 1911. Linda

These both look promising as Aunty May was born in dec 1890 making her 19 at April 1911. Elizabeth Beaman was in service at cheltenham too. this is wonderful. Where do I find the sources for this?

There is a May Hill, servant domestic, age 19, with the Brotheridge family at Wingmoor Farm, Southam near Cheltenham, Reg. Dist. Winchcomb, in the 1911 census. Record says she is born in Coleford....could the census taker have mistaken Collafield for Coleford?

Eliza Jane Beaman, born at Collafield, age 16, assistant housemaid, is at the Burlton-Bennet family home in Ravens Court, Tivoli Road, Cheltenham.

Thanks for the reply re Oliver. Yes, he is correct and I have him. The rest of the family, many of whom I remember and one of whom Irene Ellen was my maternal grandmother, cannot be found. My great grandmother Mary Hill b.1848, lost her husband James Baylis Hill in 1907 and, by the next decade was living in Pontywaun, Crosskeys, Monmouthshire in a cottage attached to an old flannel Factory. It was here that my my grandmother, Nell, married my Gloucester born grandfather.
I have found the 1911 census for all the children too old to be living with their mother, but can find nothing of Mary Hill and her children, Mary b.1890 (known as May) Irene Ellen b.1894 (known as Nell, my grandmother), James b.1887, Joseph Reynolds b.1883 (adopted)or Elizabeth Beaman b.1894 (adopted).
I knew some of these myself and still have older relatives who knew all of them, but can find no trace in 1911. The girls were certainly in service at somwe point and I believe in Cheltenham.
