Rod,

Thank you. It is of interest to me . . .every piece of the puzzle makes the picture as a whole a little clearer.

Is the phrasing "of the whole blood" typical, do you know? It is one I am not familiar with, but then I have very little experience with such things . . .

Samuel Workman born? (reply)

Okay. Now I'm thoroughly confused. Did she marry Samuel (b. 1836 to Ellis and Esther (her sister's father in law)l or Samuel, grandson of Ellis and Esther and son of Thomas (b. 1873~4)? I'm guessing from the Evans family links it is the latter?

Okay. Wrong Samuel.

He {Cyril} certainly looks like the son of Samuel Workman, who appears to divorce and then marry Eliza Jane CLARK / HUNT in 1921

Cyril Jesse WORKMAN 1904 - 1961 (reply)

Okay. Wrong Samuel. Still a relative of Annie's I would suppose, as Eliza Jane went to Dursley.

The methodist connection explains why the Workmans suddenly disappear from the parish records while still living locally.

And I thought the aunt who married late in life and was childless was going to be the easiest one on which to follow through. . .

So, like most of my research to date, two answers and lots more questions. And to think this all started from something as simple as wanting to find William Lewis. . . who is playing the world's longest running game of hide and seek.

The Company was founded by Charles Dando Purnell in 1839 as a small family printers with small print shops in Radstock, Midsomer Norton and Paulton.

In 1839, in the heart of the old coal mining community, Charles Dando Purnell established what was to become Europe's biggest printing firm.

A strict Methodist, his main aim was to alleviate the poverty and unemployment caused by the reduction in mining and closure of Flook's boot factory in Paulton.

At this time Purnell printed bills, books and postcards

It became a major publisher of bibles and at its peak employed 2,000 people before it merged with Hazell Sun to form the British Printing Corporation in 1964.

Death of Eliza Jane HUNT nee CLARKE - 1937 ? (reply)

I think I may have found Eliza's Samuel's probate record, recording his death as 13 January 1929 and his address as . . . The Quarry, Cam. That's just too tidy. I had better go back and review it again.

Nope. It's nice and tidy. Samuel WORKMAN, husband of Eliza Jane CLARKE HUNT was born abt. 1874. He is living with his parents next door to their Aunt and Uncle, Samuel and Augusta, who are the parents of George, who is the husband of . . . Annie Maria Clarke. . .at The Quarry, Cam, Dursley, Glos. (1881 census)

Death of Eliza Jane HUNT nee CLARKE - 1937 ? (reply)

Wow. Interesting. Mind boggling, in fact.

Her sister, Annie Maria Clarke, married George Workman around 1885. Annie lived to be 94, and lived at The Quarry, Cam. John and Eliza Jane raised two of Annie's children for an extended period of time . . .

So . . . now just to figure out who Samuel is in relationship to George, and see how many more times I'm related to myself. :-)

For all the hours I spent looking for her, I made a foolish mistake . . .since we all refer to her as Eliza Jane I never looked for Eliza J.; and this after I learned to just use W for William on the advanced search feature.

Again, thanks.

Death of Eliza Jane HUNT nee CLARKE

Eliza Jane was born in Garndiffaith (Pontypool) in 1856 to Richard Stephen CLARKE and Sarah Ann VINING. By age 10 the family had returned to Box Tree Cottage. On 9 Dec 1890 she marries John Edward HUNT, born 1845 at Nailsworth to Thomas HUNT and Harriet COX, later of Horsley. They live with her mother at Blakeney until John's death 17 November 1917. He was buried at Viney Hill.

She may have predeceased him. She has family in the Trevethin and Cam, Dursley areas. She also has a niece in Ontario but I can't find an emigration record which fits.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what became of Eliza Jane? (She and John had no children of their own but they had a hand in raising two of the Workman children.)
