<p>THE MORNING CHRONICLE (London) - 27 September 1837</p>
<p>Explantory Notice </p>
<p>BIRTHS</p>
<p>The birth of any child born after June 1837 *may be registered* by the registrar of the district in which the child was born, within six weeks after the birth, *without any payment being required*.</p>
<p>After six weeks, and within six months, the expense of registering will be *7s 6d.  After six months the birth cannot be registered at all.</p>

Think about £28 + in today's money.  Not sure what the average wage was for the FOD folk in 1837! although this site</p>
