Susannah MEEK 1779 Berkeley (reply)

Thanks Brian

Barzilla being a fairly unusual name, I would guess if you went back far enough, you will find a link between the two families that had Cornelius with daughter Susannah & son Barzilla.

Susannah MEEK 1779 Berkeley (reply)

Thanks Jim.
Yes there were two Susanna(h) Meeks born around the same time. The Susanna, born in Berkeley was the daughter of Cornilius and grand daughter of Barzillia Meek, not to be confused with the Susannah Meek born in the Forest, and whose father was also Cornilius.

According to the censuses, Susanna, from Berkeley who married John Oakey in St Philips and St Jacobs church in Bristol in 1813, spent her married life at Northwood Green, which is near Westbury on Severn.

Susannah MEEK 1779 Berkeley (reply)

There must be two Susannah's. The daughter of Cornelius Meek 1766/1827 & Elizabeth Taylor 1767 was baptised in 1790 :

Year: 1790
Month: Jul
Day: 22
Parents_Surname: MEEK
Child_Forenames: Susannah
Fathers_Forenames: Cornelius
Mothers_Forenames: Elisabeth
Mothers_Surname:
Residence:
Occupation:
Officiating_Minister:
Event: Baptism
Memoranda: Daug[hte]r of
Notes: Mother's name Elis entered in the PR has been expanded to Elisabeth. Date of baptism 18 July in the BTs.
Register_Reference: P220 IN 1/2
Page_Number: 13
Parish_Chapel: Mitcheldean

Although it is not uncommon for births of children to be around the date of a childs birth, Cornelius Meek & Elizabeth Taylor were married 19 Apr 1790. This Cornelius Meek was the son of James Meek 1729 & Susannah Tollisby, James being the son of Basil Meek 1694 & Susannah Watkins. So you see the name Susannah runs in the family.

Berkeley is 40 miles from Ruardean.

Susannah MEEK 1779 Berkeley (reply)

Hi Brian,
Yikes... the more I search... the more confused I get!
The one consistent thing... is that Susannah married John Oakey and died 1865.

The census records move her birthdate about... so I am wondering if the only reason for a birth year of 1779 was her estimated age at death... then is 1779 accurate?

1841 census
John b in same county (ie Glou) in 1791...... age 50
Susannah b 1786 Glou..........................age 55

1851 census
John b Herefordshire 1790...........age 61
Susannah b 1782 in Berkley Glou.... age 69

1861 census
John b Aston Ingham Here 1788...... age 73
Susannah b Berkely Glou 1782........age 79

The LDS site has support for her birth being 1779,1782,1785,1790...
You would think with names like Cornelius and Barzilla in the works it would make it simpler to find!

The LDS site has 2 lists of siblings... so.. either by sheer coincidence.. 2 families named their children in essentially the same order... or... it is the same family and the dates are confuddled.

Susannah b 1779 dau of Cornelius (b 1753) all in Berkeley
siblings
Barzillai, 1781
John, 1783
William, 1785
George, 1787

then born 1790 to Cornelius and Eliz... all in Mitcheldean
siblings:
john 1792
barzilla 1793
william 1794
george 1796
cornelius
hannah
christana
elizabeth

So... it is still pretty muddy water!

Susannah MEEK 1779 Berkeley (reply)

Thanks Trudy. However I'm not convinced about this Susannah. There was a baptism in Mitcheldean in 1790 for a Susannah, daughter of Cornelius and Elisabeth Meek.

The Susanna I have, is mentioned in censuses as being born in Berkeley, which is the other side of the River Severn and about 30 miles from Micheldean, and also her wedding took place on 8 June 1813 at St Philips and St Jacobs parish church in the centre of Bristol.

Her only connection, as far as I can see, with the Forest of Dean is through her marriage to John Oakey of Aston Ingham.

They did, in the censuses live in the parish of Northwood Green, Nr Westbury on Severn.

According to the Mormon records her father was Cornelius, born in Gloucester and grandfather Brazillia Meek

Susannah MEEK 1779 Berkeley (reply)

I think this may be the right family:

Susannah 1779-1865
daughter of Cornelius 1766-1827 and Elisabeth Taylor 1765-1837
who were married 19 April 1790
all in Gloucestershire

her siblings were Barzillai, George, and John

this next bit I am not 100% sure of...

Cornelius, son of James b 1729 and Susannah b 1730 (last name is listed as both Tollisby and Follis)

James, son of Bazil b 1694 and Susannah Watkins b 1695

Bazil, son of Francis b 1655 and Margaret Lamb b 1659

I also have death dates and siblings.
I hope this helps!
