All the Christchurch registers have been transcribed and are in the database. The reason for the word Microfiche is that the transcripts were taken from microfiches of the original registers. We did that in the early stages of the project, but now we just photograph the registers.

Parish Records Project Progress - January 2011 (reply)

I am new to the site and am researching some people who were probably baptised, married and buried at Christchurch. They lived around Christchurch in places such as Joyford Hill.

I note that in the parish list of the status of the work done, Christchurch has several entries that state "Micro fiche". Is there any intention of having these entered at some time ?

I am impressed with the amount of work that the team plus volunteers have done and just wish I was closer so I could offer to help. But Brisbane Australia is a long way away!

I brought a copy of the Freeminers CD only a few months ago (summer 2010) - it is very interesting & excellent value for money. Listed were all of my Benfield stone mason ancestors & many of my Wintle coal freeminers.
As it was only an index I thought it would be nice to have a paper copy of the actual application. Several years ago a cousin of mine obtained from the Glos Record Office, 2 photocopies concerning my grandfather & gt grandfather's application for a very small sum - 10pence each. Now I know we have inflation etc, but when I enquired recently for further paper photocopies, I was told that now the Glos Record Office charges £20 for a A4 sheet!!!!!!

Privacy Reasons cut-off dates (reply)

Hi

How does the Glos BMDs Indexes come off over this?. They list Forest of Dean marriages beyond the cut off date. Granted not exact dates but it does give the basic info which alot of us are after.

Parish Records Project Progress - January 2011 (reply)

Thank you to all who worked so hard on this fantastic project!

"So what next!... May I suggest that any other ideas are posted on the Forum, so that we can all join in the discussion."

It has been mentioned on this forum that "the Forest of Dean Local History Society put the names of 600 or so Freeminers (@1838 - 1960) on a CD". Is this group still active and is the CD still available? If not, is there any chance they would allow the list of names to be published on this web site?

List of transcribed Parish Records (reply)

One idea for a useful research tool that I do not think you have (though perhaps I have missed it). Could you list out all the Parishes you have covered and state what coverage they give for those empty Civil War years ie when do the records of each parish stop and then start up again.

On our main Parish Records web page you will see the following:

Progress Overview
Our up-to-date list of transcribed records lists all the parishes and years which have been transcribed and what records are currently in progress of being transcribed.

If you have an interest in a particular parish, the easiest way to find what records are available for that parish is to type the parish name in the search box.

Parish Records Project Progress - January 2011 (reply)

I have just read your emailed Newsletter regarding progress. It is an amazing record. There is no doubt that the Forest of Dean site is second to none in terms of the family info that it contains, and the help it gives to researchers. I have found it incredibly useful, and my husband who is researching family lines elsewhere in England is green with envy! I was glad to see that you got an honourable mention in the Jan issue of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' magazine.

I love the idea of now going out beyond the edges of the area, especially for marriages. I have found family members (especially the men) based in Redmarley, Linton by Ross and other FoD villages getting married in Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester, then returning to have children.

One idea for a useful research tool that I do not think you have (though perhaps I have missed it). Could you list out all the Parishes you have covered and state what coverage they give for those empty Civil War years ie when do the records of each parish stop and then start up again.

Thank you again,

Jane Jackson

Parish Records Project Progress - January 2011 (reply)

I note that you have thoughts of transcribing marriage records for the whole of Gloucestershire.
Although this site is for the Forest of Dean and the surrounding area, I am sure a lot of members like me would be really grateful.
Family members have moved from other parts of the county to the Forest of Dean area and it would be a great help in our research to find the missing links.
